An avatar is just a collectible that can be used for when your user is looked up or in the boards.

pretty much.... and there are wut like over 300 to choose from now? but before you can use them you have to earn them by eather playing games and or doing certain things around the site.

Basically they are shiny pictures that do nothing for you..kind of a waste of time unless your a hardcore neopets fanatic.

No not really. If you collect enough and get in the high scores table, you can get a trophy. Don't know if this one is obsolete yet though...
