Why Codex sucks right now:
  1. Activity
    1. Active members have been banned
      1. Rambo (Annoying, spammy, obnoxious, but created activity)
      2. SimonTheMime (Avatar problems and maybe something else, I don't know the full story. We need a good "Discuss")
      3. Lee/Frizzle (Controversy creates activity, but he also was on frequently and posted, which produces more activity)
    2. Lack of interesting topics
      1. Not everyone likes drugs, nor do I want to talk about them every damn damn day
      2. Religion
        1. Must we beat it to death? There is at least a topic or two going on daily involving religion.
        2. Can't we be respectable if we do have a religious topic? -Cough- Aethiests -Cough-
          1. Every topic involving religion I hear "Organized religion sucks", either explain it or GTFO of the topic and keep your trap shut
          2. Don't criticize people because of what they believe in. Attack their arguement, not the person, and even then their belief won't change, because frankly, arguements online do jack shit
      3. Digg articles- I read them on Digg, I don't care to read them again
    3. Lack of things to reply to
      1. Stems from lack of interesting topics
      2. Also created by people not replying to other posts that may otherwise be interesting
  2. There is NO FUN
    1. The Staff
      1. E-Drama crackdown
        1. Damn near anything that may cause problems- Removed. God damnit, we're (Semi-)mature people here, we can handle it.
        2. Lack of E-Drama also lowers the activity level. Cracking down too hard also makes some regular posters post less frequently
      2. Obnoxious and not on top of things
        1. http://www.neocodex.us/forum/This-is-a-News-Post-t74816.html
          1. That topic was basically spam, at least say something that has gone on.
          2. Like Joe said, that dumb topic would draw attention from other, possibly interesting, topics
        2. The staff has plenty of shit to do that has not been done, in some cases for prolonged periods of time
          1. Codies?
          2. The tag contest?
          3. E-Zine?
          4. Revamping some stuff? (May be done, I'm not positive)
    2. Nothing to say
      1. Seriously, I have nothing to say
        1. Religion- Shit has been beat out of it
        2. Drugs? Don't do them, don't care, don't want to talk about it
      2. Smart ass replies?
        1. Nothing to reply to, so I can't say anything
        2. Even if I did, I'd get a warn because of the anti-E-Drama regime
So yeah, I spent a little bit of time on that. May contain some spelling mistakes, because for some reason Firefox has decided not to underline anything, even when I noticed I mistyped it. Thats my feelings about Codex right now, say whatever you want, I don't care. Add to it if you wish, call it stupid, I don't care. Its my opinion that I'm entitled to.

Edit: Added Digg articles to list.

And see what I mean? Creationists are picked on by everyone. dry.gif

Thanks. Honestly, I was expecting it to be closed/me being warned because of how I stated some stuff in there, plus the title, and a whole section dedicated to staff.

Oh, and if it was closed/me warned, it would just reinforce a point.

    3. The server went busy tonight. Honestly, there wasn't even much posting going on at that point!

    4. Some of our members are horrible to pretty much anyone who has ever said something that isn't particularly smart.

Though, I think this is a pretty good topic. Additionally we have been discussing the rank tags tongue.gif

i do agree with ALMOST everything you posted here, BUT as far as the digg articles, I do know that a few people read digg constantly, but most of you peeps that I have talked to has never even HEARD of digg (are you guys living under a rock?) so, even though you don't like people posting the digg articles, I'll post some that I think are pretty interesting. tongue.gif

Meh, go ahead and post them. It will boost activity and give us more to reply to. 1we8.gif I guess that one isn't that big of a deal.

    Here's my theory.

There were games that we played as a community that used to fuel our activity. (Ie.. neopets, L2, maple, maybe wow.. all of which are now abandoned pretty much).

Also.. a lot of the old active group.. had an incentive to be active.. to either attain private, a gfx rank, an administrative position, programming, etc..
It seems now that more or less everybody has attained their goals.. and the excitement of achieving that goal which might have fueled activity among individuals has faded as well.

So now we're all kind of blah.

I think we should have a topic where everyone just drinks a lot of alcohol and then we attempt to have a debate.

wow, very thought out and nicely presented.

i'd give it about a B+, but if i end up needing to use a bell curve, it'll most likely reach A.

i know i haven't been here as long as a lot of other people, but i will have to agree with 'scorch that there has been quite a few "noobs" (for lack of a better word) joining the site, and unfortunately, most of their posts are either "oh taht's kool" (spelling intended), or a semi-unnecessary topic such as "how does an avatar work?"

    -_-

seriously folks, if you've been playing neopets long enough to find the need for a cheat site, you *probably* know how to do BASIC things on neopets itself.

maybe there will be a new murderkill patch that seeks and destroys ubernoobs?

    QUOTE(Kitsune @ Nov 11 2007, 12:31 AM) View Post
You raise some really good points. I mean that.

Simon isn't banned though. Rambo self-banned.

I don't know how to say this without sounding like I'm betraying someone, but I too feel like nothing is improved on around here. There's a to-do list which grows by the day (almost literally) and one thing might get ticked off a month. It's really getting to me because I know how much better things would be if some of these things were simply done.
There's apparently a very specific way things get done and only a small number who are capable of doing this, thus barely anything gets done
In defence of the rank tag contest, the problems raised by Sasha caused a delay and I'm trying my hardest to get the last admin to vote on the set so I can announce the results.

I'm in two minds about people's posts. In one sense I think activity is unusually low. I know that people get busy, but it shows that we simply aren't gaining a new member base which want to contribute to the site. In return, older members have little to discuss and there's only so much you can talk about in one topic. There's a problem if we can't get new members
On that note, when people are harsh or blunt to people, especially new members, they tend to get put off the place and want to leave - online, you simply don't have to put up with people telling you that you are wrong and so on, you just leave.

On the other hand, I can't stand it when people post for the sake of posting for activity's sake. I'd rather read 2 intelligent posts worthy or discussion than 10 posts which say basically nothing at all.

In terms of interesting topics... well, again I agree, but they don't come from nowhere... you have to have the member base to be able to make a topic interesting. I think the religion and drug topics are way over-used, but in saying that... if they weren't here, not much else would be either.

I don't personally read digg articles, so a place where only the most interesting articles are posted (with any luck) is, in my opinion a good thing. That way I can voice my opinion, read what others think and gain some knowledge along the way.

As to this staff-crack down. It's difficult to view things objectively on this point. What I see as a real problem, won't be viewed the same way as some others.
If I see something that I know for sure will lead to conflict, you might see as harmless fun. The problem lies in that you can't know for sure what people are going to get up and arms about until it's too late.
And if we were to use discretion and decide a situation should be handled more relaxed, then people cry discrimination and favouritism. It's not possible to win. You end up taking a hard line every time to avoid this. But in doing that, those who are warned get upset. It's just not possible to win.
I've always personally taken a literal approach, with limited discretion in applying the warn policy. And I figure, I'm going to end up pissing someone off, may as well stick to the rules to avoid further problems.

I also agree with damn near all of that. I never read Digg, or anything like that either and Codex is the only site pointing me to interesting things. And the to-do list is a problem because, in all honesty, anything needing to be scripted/fixed ON the site has to be handled by 3 people. Possibly I would learn PHP if I knew I was going to be allowed to help the site, but until I know I can help, I won;' bother.

And I would rather read 1 good topic than 20 shitty ones.
