ok so i was riding the A train today coming back from school & there was this dirty ass smelly homeless guy laying on the bench. like 10 people walk through the opposite track thingy so they can get in the next car, but i was on his side so i went through that one. im bout to get off at my stop and this fat spanish guy flashes his tonka truck NYPD badge tells me to get off the train with him so he can speak to me. he takes down my information and the entire time i think he's just trying to scare me straight, but then his partner nudges me explaining that it's a $75 dollar summons ticket and i need to pay it within a month. a 75 dollar ticket for going through the fucking train cars??? had these pigs been doing their job correctly, they could have addressed the actual issue (dirty ass homeless guy laying on the bench - which is illegal to do btw) and not waste taxpayer's money on tedious fucking bullshit like giving a 16 year old a ticket for moving train cars.

as a side note to those whom arent familiar with NYC - moving through train cars in NYC trains is similar to jaywalking, it's probably illegal but nobody, including most cops don't really care about. it's a minor thing, and should and normally is overlooked.

Er, it is a law. People get ticketed for jaywalking all the time on campus. But I see police do it when I'm downtown.

Not really anything you can do about it =/

I didn't know that blink.gif....I was doing it all the time when I went to New York in February.

It's pretty pathetic they busted you for it. Just out of interest....What EXACTLY is jaywalking? and why is it against the law? I'm pretty sure it's just crossing the road when it is not designated 'crossing' spot....but I can't believe it would be that simple....or is it?

it is that simple, and usually its NOT in a crosswalk either. but in places like New York and here in Las Vegas...I'd actually like to see the Jaywalking laws enforced. I dont know how many assholes I almost ran over out here because they just feel like crossing the street whenever or wherever they want regardless of oncoming traffic.

so are you saying Jaywalking, where you not only endanger yourself but other drivers, shouldnt be a ticketable offense but spitting is? I hope you never become a cop.

So I'm confused, does that mean that if you dip, you have to carry a spittoon around with you?

Jaywalking I can understand why it's a ticketable offense, as I can see crossing in between cars. It sucks you got burned for it, but it is really dangerous =/

Where did I say that Jaywalking should not be enforced or ticketed?...oh yeah, I didn't....Plus I live in the UK so jaywalking has no relevance to me whatsoever if I became a police officer.

i guess the severity differs with location, in NYC there will be at least 5 people who jaywalk on each red light

It sucks but it's still a law you are suppose to follow. The law is in place for you safety.

Also, you would rather the police arrest a hobo who obviously doesnt have anywhere else to go then give you a small fine. Just pay the fine and get on with your life.

$75 doesn't sound like a small fine to me...and the Hobo shouldn't be there, period. It's not about whether he has somewhere else to go or not. You just said yourself that laws are supposed to be followed.

It can't be one rule for one person and then something different for the next person.

Why can't it? It's done all the time. I mean of course everything should be equal, but the fact is that society is like that and things aren't equal.
And 75 dollars is a very small fine considering in most areas it's 300 dollars for each piece of litter you drop.

Also, where do you propose we put the hobo?

Gah, Definitely go to court. Explain about the homeless man on the bench, but do NOT say anything insulting towards the police officers.

Remember, you did do it. If you're apologetic enough, judge will probably say "w/e". And anyway, writing the cops a letter, or yelling at them over the phone, will not get your ticket dismissed. happy.gif

DEFINITELY take that one to court. XD explain that you didn't feel safe with the hobo.

here if you get a ticket for something frivolous, and take it to court, they'll usually be like wtf was this cop on? ticket revoked.

that happened for my sister getting a ticket for going through a yellow light. XD

Hard to dispute when you knew that what you were doing was illegal, even if it's a dumb law. =/

Well, it would be disputable if he brought up the homeless guy saying he didn't feel comfortable and, in a non discrimatory way, unsafe, and had to do what he did...and tha tthe cops didn't do anything about it
