I joined when I was four. I still don't really know what the thing is for, though.
I have a vague memory of catching newts in a pond in the back garden of the house where I attended a meeting one time, but that's it tongue.gif

Oh, and on the topic of eletist societies, I'm also joining the FreeMasons soon-ish.

So, discuss exclusive societies you've joined, or want to join.

*raises eyebrow* you're going to join a society where their basis is christianity? So do you have a relative who is a member?

Anyways I believe Eeyore's dad is a part of MENSA. She says they don't do very much at all though the whole purpose of the group supposedly was to solve world problems?

I would join the Masons however the women don't get anywhere tongue.gif My great grandfather was very VERY high up in the masons so I could technically join but honestly I don't know if it would be worth it.

I took the test and passed. I had to solve any 10 problems from this puzzle book. Then I found out the benefeit is just solving more puzzles. I declined.

Ummm... they're not? They are in America at least. I went to a freemason dinner with one of my friends and they had a society called Daughters of Job, had a bible in their lodge, and recited text from it.

MENSA is too easy to get in. It's like getting into a state university in America.

Yeah but do you have a relative who's in it? Just curious. I actually don't know how common it is to have one.

Sounds like a dodgy lodge to me.
Lodges are supposed to hold a copy of the sacred text of every religion practised by the members. Reading from any one of them isn't supposed to be part of any Masonic meeting, though.

As in, they only let you join if you meet a tough criterion... is that not the very definition?

It wasn't a meeting tongue.gif It was a scholarship dinner where they awarded scholarships to certain people. My friend just happened to invite me when she got one.

i think they are a selective group, yes. elitist society numero uno? eh tongue.gif

anyways, taken from the freemason website:
    QUOTE
    Welcome to Freemasonry.org
Freemasonry is the oldest and largest world wide fraternity dedicated to the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of a Supreme Being. Although of a religious nature, Freemasonry is not a religion. It urges its members, however, to be faithful and devoted to their own religious beliefs.

joe, i'm sure you could twist and warp that around to fit your atheist beliefs, but in reality, at their base they are religious tongue.gif.

I've never tested myself for MENSA. To be honest, it isn't going to prove anything, and it doesn't accomplish anything either. Masons, on the other hand, are quite interesting. Lots of cool history in the masons.

Hmm...thought about MENSA...couldn't be bothered to do the tests and such.

I used to be part of Rainbow Girls, which I think was an offshoot/affiliation with the Masons...at the very least we used thier lodge. tongue.gif

That came across as detestably smug, and really, you know little of my beliefs past the fact that I reject the Judeo-Christian God.

I've filled my application almost a year ago. I will start attending lodge meetings sometime around August.

Still, religious discussion is forbidden between Masons when at the lodge.

lol! You have an image in your signature that talks about Occam's razor and how it removes "superfluous supernatural entities!" and how God didn't create the universe, it just exists.
To me that seems in conflict with the requirements of Free Masons
    QUOTE
Regular Freemasonry requires that its candidates believe in a Supreme Being, but the interpretation of the term is subject to the conscience of the candidate. This means that men from a wide range of faiths, including (but not limited to) Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc. can and have become Masons.

Just searching "freemason atheist" gives up links that say "No atheist can be a free mason"

Well done. You can copy text from a website written to give a quick intro to Masonry.
By that definition Buddhists would not be admitted, yet oddly enough, they are. Curious indeed...

I don't believe the Masons stipulate "supernatural" belief.
And the quote is clearly inaccurate, since that's exactly what I'm doing.
