With all these new members joining our site, I thought it would be a good time to post a little on some general advice to heed when you are online. This applies to both new members and old members alike as everyone can benefit a bit from being careful.

Never give out personal information online
There is no need for someone to know your personal information online such as passwords, social security numbers or credit card numbers. Unless you are dealing with a secure and trusted source, you should never be discussing these types of things online and even more importantly, you should never give these types of things out.

Be careful with what you post online
The internet seems like it is a place where once you post something, it is most likely going to be safe. However, this is not the case and in many situations the internet can be cause of shame for many people based on what they have posted online. What I am talking about is that you should be careful with what you do and how you conduct yourself online. It may seem that no one but those who you are showing can see this, but you never know when this is going to come back and haunt you. Even on codex, I advise you all to be careful and post responsibly. Even though we are all friends, you never know what you may regret in the future.

I'm sure you have all heard of those stories where employers find pictures of a prospective hire on Facebook or MySpace and change their minds based on what they see (lewd drunkedness and other acts similar to it).

Always think before you act
I just covered two main principles of remaining safe online but the general rule of thumb to avoid any of these problems is to always think before you do anything. This is harder than it sounds and often times we shrug it off thinking that we do do it, but in the end we really do have to be careful.

Yea, internet can be pretty scary. I've seen so many people get in trouble and get in fucked up situations because of the internet lol. Just with a simple google or other methods which I won't name, you can find out a persons phone number, name, address, history, workplace, etc. Privacy is done with.
It's interesting though, to see what happens once this internet generation grows up. Would the internet come back to haunt people? I can just imagine a person from our generation running for congressman or president or something, and have something he said in a forum be used against him.

Whilst that may happen, I doubt that the generation that would be voting on such a person would be so sensitive to such things as the current voting generations.
After all, they lived through the technological revolution too...

I have to agree with Joe. Even today's average voter cares little about what a candidate did in the past. Fact of the matter is, it's not as important as what he will do in the future tongue.gif.

I haven't seen the video and I don't plan to but seriously?

I've heard of many cases where employers go to check facebooks or myspace pages of potential hires and change their minds based on the "crazy parties" that these guys attend. At the end of the day, everyone has a responsibility to be mature about everything that they do. Though a little fun is always good tongue.gif.
