I'm sure you could probably eat more than you do. I have a friend whos an ectomorph that's pretty big now and he had to eat a very strict diet before he could gain the vaguest muscle memory to retain mass over 170 pounds.
If you're serious about losing weight (and it's more than just 10 pounds), I suggest meeting with a nutritionist, or starting a program (ie. Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers - those 2 are the only one's approved with a great success rate).
If you don't want to do any of the above then I'd suggest smaller portions, more vegetables, and exercise (gradually build up your level of exercise - if you do nothing for exercise in a typical day, start by taking a 10-30 minute walk 4 days a week, then move up to 5, etc). Also take vitamins regardless of what you do.
low-carb diets are pretty stupid. They're good if you're a bodybuilder trying to prepare for a competition, but beyond that, they're not good for jack shit. Slow carb is actually more effective. You still consume carbohydrates, just the right ones as opposed to junk and a lot of whole grain like some people seem to do.

It did work. That's what it's suppose to do, it's like a temporary adrenaline rush. Makes you stronger more then bigger.
