I'd suggest maybe doing the background transparent as well.
I figured I'd at least get the background all one color... so he could change the color and set that color as transparent if need be

Here is my attempt...saved it as a .gif so the background should be transparent I think

You just didn't give it a transparent back ground.
Doesn't matter what you save it as really if it's not transparent.
