It's safe. The only thing you have to worry about are the butthurt overfeeders (who may be cheaters themselves) who will send neomails questioning your legitimacy. Otherwise, it's safe

Well I was doing my dailies and my Gelert is now baby.. I didnt do anything that would change him!! WTF... I want my other pet back.. it was seriouly bobbing apples then spinning the wheel of excitement and between that its changed

You probably got hit by Boochi and just somehow missed, the event, I'm sorry :X Boochi is pretty rare though, but you probably shouldn't keep any "expensive" pets as your active in case he comes up
