I hate to say it, I am also running into the problem where I'm apparently getting items, but they never show up... Attic items are processing correctly, but not a single item I bought in the main shops has actually been bought.
The only thing I'd check is the item management to see if you're storing it some place you're not checking. Other than that, I'm not having this issue so I can't really help.
Is it with all items, some items, at a certain time of day, or what?

Don't be silly. The real "big ideas" don't come from education, they come from ignoring it.
They come from ignoring high school education and early undergrad maybe. Initial education in reading (& comprehension) is necessary, though that can be done at home.
Graduate studies are where some really cool shit happens, and where awesome research gets funded. It's very, very difficult to get to that point without having paid attention to some of your education, though. Especially in specialized topics.
Pretty sure Max is talking about how most people don't even know how to read, and how schooling is necessary for some children to learn at all.

I started playing during the Tyrannian Time Machine plot line. Oh how I miss it. <3
The biggest thing I miss is the old Terror Mountain though. I still go to Ice Caves to get to the kiosk on accident sometimes.
