Problem connecting to internet on new computer

Hello I was wondering if you could help me. I recently got a new computer from Dell (Got it yestarday) It's a nice computer and I really like it it's just that I'm having a problem hooking up the internet on it. When I take the little phone looking cable from the back of my old computer (This one) And put it in the new one it takes for ever to "Connect" When it's finished "Connecting" it say "Limited Connection or no Connection" then I tried repairing it. It said it can't re-new the IP adress. Then I tried disabling it and then putting it back but that didn't make a change at all. I'm getting realy frustrated does any one know the solution for this really annoying problem?
