In 1971, the war on drugs began.

In 2001, the war on terror began.

It's 2011. The war on the internet is beginning.

There's the official statement about it.

The individuals and two corporations – Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited – were indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on Jan. 5, 2012, and charged with engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement. The individuals each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit racketeering, five years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, 20 years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering and five years in prison on each of the substantive charges of criminal copyright infringement.

That doesn't sound good...

Money laundering?

Sounds like they were into a significant number of other... areas. I can't see how money laundering can be a result of ad revenue.

Assuming, of course, that it's true.

The indictment charges the defendants with conspiring to launder money by paying users through the sites’ uploader reward program and paying companies to host the infringing content.

I'm not sure how that is money laundering considering both of those things listed involve outgoing transactions. Surely for it to be laundering there has to be incoming transactions originating somewhere along the same route? O_o

I have limited knowledge on how a website can be shut down through dns but didn't it happen to pirate bay and didn't everything come back the way it was?

Ange would know. :/

After ten seconds on Wikipedia, I believe it would go like this:
Megaupload make ad revenue on illegal content, which is a non-cash resource and therefore already in the financial system. This is then distributed to the users via rewards system, and then recouped in the form of subscriptions.

Maybe.

Probably not.

I'm guessing.

Totally.
