Second day playing New Leaf! I already have my second house payment done, but the third of 98k bells will take a few days. So far the shop has only sold shovels and fishing poles so all I've been doing is fishing. I can't seem to catch a damn shark, though. Came across 4 of them and they all got away.
I've been playing for 4 days so far.
The Axe and fishing rod haven't appeared in my shop yet.

I've been playing 5 days. You won't get Axe or Watering Can until a new shop opens up between the regular one and the clothing one. 
I kept wondering the same thing. xD
I've managed to catch just one shark. I'm on the 3rd house payment (got a second floor).

Keil - Yeah, the first two days all I did was fish 'cause I had nothing else to do. I like catching bugs; it's a bit more challenging. It took my 6th try to catch the shark. I watched closely and focused on the sound of the line dropping.
Ivysaur - I looked up the tools because I want a slingshot, and the axe and watering can are sold in a gardening store which I is unlocked later. Hope you get the fishing rod soon, though, lol.
Harlow - I'm about halfway through my third payment (of 98k). I wonder how many upgrades we'll be able to have!

I just started today and all I did was fisI got nothing great except for a few zebra tigerfish or whatever they are. You'll definitely catch some sharks. The timing is too quick for me /sob
