A pet become untrainable when the pets HP, Strength, or Defense becomes greater than 2x the pets Level.
A pet with 1,100 HP, 85 Strength, and 30 Defense that is level 550 is trainable, but if its level was only 549 it would be untrainable.

I buy from a few. I put the whole list in, then I see which ones barely restock, then I remove them and get left with a 10 or less shop list, sitting in each of em for 30 mins each.. been working not too bad for me.
