Soda: it means carbonated water. Nothing else.
Pop: it's a sound and frankly a ridiculous name for anything, let alone a common object like a drink
Fizzy: see 'Pop'
Soft Drink: too long

So coke is the only feasible way to say it. Y'all are pretty silly :D

Soda.

So if coke is the term for many places then what about the actual drug?

Cocaine, of course. Coke in informal slang I'd guess. But usually there's no chance to mix up the two down here.

I generally just say "drink".
Unless I'm being specific, in which case I'll actually say what I want.

Is that too much to ask?

Seconded. It also help that coke is the most common soft drink in the country.

Soda.
Why would you call it coke if youre getting something thats not coke o_0

I'm pretty sure the current situation would dictate the proper item. Not really wandering around a nightclub looking for Coca Cola.

LOL @ the chapelle thing.

Also we're all soda down here. How on earth can you call it coke when coke is different from pepsi and 7up etc. How do you differentiate?
I want a coke coke
I want a 7up coke
I want a sunkist coke
Like that?

No like this

Waitress: And what would you like to drink?
You: I'll have a coke please.
Waitress: What kind?
You: 7up
Waitress: ok

That's fucking stupid.

It's like saying the following is a reasonable line of conversation;

Waitress: And what would you like to eat?
You: I'll have meat please.
Waitress: What kind?
You: Carrots.
Waitress: Ok.

Haha i see but if you wanted a coke? Would it go like this:
Waitress: And what would you like to drink?
You: I'll have a coke please.
Waitress: What kind?
You: Coke
Waitress: wtf?

rofl I lold pretty hard at that.

I'll have to agree with the crowd saying this coke charade is ridiculous, the only time I could see a situation like this being acceptable is asking for a Kleenex. Nobody asks for tissue paper, right? Maybe a tissue. Maybe.

No, it would hypothetically go like this:

Waitress: And what would you like to drink?
You: I'll have a coke please.
Waitress: What kind?
You: Coca-Cola
Waitress: ok

or alternatively

Waitress: And what would you like to drink?
You: I'll have a coke please.
Waitress: What kind?
You: Diet Coke
Waitress: ok

But most people would order a Diet coke or Coca-Cola straight from the get-go. Do y'all northerners take two tries to get an order right? Down here we say what we want the first time.

There's really no need for a catch-all word unless you're in a general situation and then it is recognized as such and 'coke' means 'coke'.

You just contradicted yourself completely.

Your examples involved asking for a drink, waitress responding with a question as to what type of 'coke' you would like (wtf?) and then obviously you answer with what type of drink. We 'northerners' or in this case any people who are reasonably using some logic, would ask for a diet coke, coke, root beer etc. off the first try. You mocked people asking for soft drink because it apparently took too long, your scenarios asking for coke would easily take longer.

Can I get a sweet tea, please? Put an end to all this foolishness.

You know what happens around here?

Waitress: What can I get you to drink, hun?
You: I'll have a coke. Don't call me 'hun'.
Waitress: Okeydoke, baby. *leaves without further questioning and BRINGS YOU A FUCKING COKE-A-COLA like any normal person would*

Soda, of course. Give me a break.
When I lived in Portland, everyone around me called it pop and it infuriated me.

I was editing noitidart's comment to be more like we do it down here.

Waitress: What kind?
You: Coke

But we don't do that exactly, we order the brand on the first try, I was commenting that y'all must be silly to take two tries like 'Noit' :D

Here we just say what we want when ordering... but when we're buying a soft drink from a vending machine or something, we're buying a 'pop'. It sounds ridiculous, but everyone does it, so whatever. :p

BTW: Sweeney, PRBM, and Ali, well said. :p

Whoever did this graph thing is an idiot. I'm in Oklahoma and we say soda here. Colorado also says soda. The majority of people I know that say "coke" for everything are from retarded-ville, aka Texas.

Pop? I thought this was the 21st century not the 19th...
Jaykayjaykay that was rude.

I don't understand why you would call all soft drinks coke...that just doesn't make sense

cool story bro, good luck getting another job

Last month I quit my job. I finished school several months ago, I am 18 years old and waiting for a response to my request.

Alright, cut it out or I'll start issuing warns.

While we're on the discussion about warns, why is it they never go away? Full or empty would be nice instead of looking at a 50% warn bar FOREVER.
