I really hope there's a girl on the show who gets an abortion and is happy with it. I hate the way the media demonizes women who have abortions and don't feel "OMG IT WAS THE HARDEST DECISION OF MY LIFE" about it. It's so fucking annoying.

Well, I don't think you can be happy about getting an abortion. It is generally not something women do for fun. Still, if the abortion is a necessary and right decision, I also hope that it is not demonized on that show. Do keep the thread updated though, can't get US tv here. <_<

Well, if it was me, the decision would be more "Do I want to damage my uterus vs Feeding a darned kid."

It IS hard though. Not back-breaking, but it's quite literally a life-changing situation. Though as for demonizing abortions, I hate more the fact that there are still people and countries and religions who frown and bar abortion. Abortion should be about choice and preferences, just like getting pregnant and which school to send your kid to and what brand of milk to feed them. Insisting some idiot 14-year-old who doesn't have both money and job to have the kid is putting everyone in misery. In the end, it's the kid's parents who end up having to pay for their grandkid. (If they deign to.) The teen gets the stigma and the responsibility, and the newborn gets a rough life. Insisting someone who's barely a kid themselves to have their own kid is just, IMO, stupid.

I don't think any 14 year old should ever have a child. Honestly in Mishelle's Perfect World any baby being carried by someone 15 or younger should be made to have an abortion. They can't even get jobs, it's physically damaging, and there's no way the father can support them if he's the same age. No 14 year old should mother a child, they're still children themselves and it's sad because when I went to middle school I knew soo many girls who were pregnant, and I knew a couple girls who had abortions.

My aunt had my cousin at 14, and my cousin hates her with every fiber of her being because of it. My middle school had a lot of pregnant girls. It's sad that girls try to act like women and be sexy as soon as any signs of puberty come on. I watched a documentary called The Teening of Childhood. It was really sad seeing lingerie for preteens being sold in stores.

I'm going to see if I'm able to find a live stream somewhere online. I'll post it here if someone posts one on this other site I go to if anyone else is interested in watching it.

Kids should not be having kids. It's that simple. Cut the religious crap and start thinking about our young women, ok society! I do think this kid should get an abortion, but seriously, she ALREADY had a kid! Didn't she learn ANYTHING??? And seriously, is MTV supposed to be educating its viewers? That's the parents' job. But I guess if the parents had been parenting, this kid wouldn't have gotten pregnant TWICE.

Well I'm waiting to see what actually happened before I say anything about her getting pregnant again. It's quite possible they were using a condom and it failed and they didn't know or something. It's very realistic that something unexpected could've happened. It's unrealistic to expect them to just go celibate.

I can't remember where I heard about the success rate of condoms not being 100%.. More like 97% or thereabouts.

Which means people should use another form just in case. What about the pill? Women should take an active role in making sure they're safe.

Yeah there's a lot of methods. The patch, the pill, nuva ring, etc. But nothing is 100%. One of the girls on the show became pregnant because her doctor put her on antibiotics and didn't tell her that it would make her birth control ineffective. But you never know. I don't get it either though. She had one of the tougher pregnancies, if I went through all the shit she went through while pregnant I would've been on birth control asap.

    [edit]

I just watched it. Turns out she was on depo provera but she missed her appointment. She had unprotected sex because she believed that even though she missed her shot the birth control was still in her. Yeah she's just REALLY dumb because that's exactly how the girl with TWINS got pregnant.

Oh trust me homeboy. I have a lot to say. Okay so for anyone who has no intentions of watching the special, here’s a synopsis.

    Spoiler

I feel as though the show focused too much on Markai. Abortion was clearly the best choice for their situation because obviously having 2 kids so young were going to pretty much obliterate any chance she had of going to college. I really just cannot understand why she would think that if she missed a shot the birth control would just “magically stay in her” I feel like that was a huge cop out and that Dr. Drew should’ve called her out on it. Obviously if she didn’t need to take the shot every 3 months, they wouldn’t make her take the shot every 3 fucking months. She was stupid, he was stupid, end of. It pissed me off that she actually tried to use that as an excuse.

    Spoiler

I really enjoyed the girls that they had to talk about their abortions. They were very well spoken and their stories were interesting. I felt bad for the girl who lived in the state where she had to get parental consent before she could get an abortion. She was able to get around the consent law by pleading in front of a judge and getting him to allow her to get the abortion without having to tell her parents. I personally think that’s something they could’ve talked about more. They should’ve covered how to deal with the stigma attached to abortion because that’s something they just kind of breezed over, they should’ve talked about the laws that prevent teen girls from receiving access to abortion, and the resources they have to get around those obstacles. I feel as though they focused too much on the drama of Markai’s situation rather than the actual subject at hand. But then again, this is MTV and they’re all a bunch of fucking morons.

I feel that over all the show was biased against abortion. I know that Dr. Drew is personally pro-choice, and obviously the girls were pro-choice. But the editing was specifically pro-life. They constantly had her talking about how it was such a tough decision. Arguing about “it’s not that thing, that thing could’ve developed to be just like our daughter” and showing the baby, showing the mom playing with the baby. I don’t think the 8 month old should’ve been included in the special because it was about Markai, her boyfriend and their decision. I feel like it could’ve done better but I’m also grateful they at least touched on the subject of abortion, they covered the different types of abortion, how a woman could feel after abortion. So they covered the basics, but with the hour they had they definitely could’ve done more. And like I already said the fact that they made it air at 11:30 on a work night pisses me off since they put all of the other 16 and pregnant shows during primetime.

I was pissed that I missed the show. I totally forgot. I am so grateful for your summary though because now I know I'm not watching the damn thing. I fucking hate biased television. I don't even know why but it pisses me off so much. I just want to hit everyone when I see shit like that on TV for everyone to see, shoving their beliefs in these obviously impressionable people who watch stupid shit like 16 and Pregnant. As I've said before and I will say forever more - everyone should just kill themselves. A fetus is not a baby or a living thing and you're not "killing it" because it's not alive. Less people = better planet = happy me.

You're totally right. I just hope that they use this as a stepping stone to getting the topic of abortion out of the shadows. I feel that by now the whole 16 and pregnant/Teen Mom/Baby High/etcetc should just be done now. We don't need any more seasons of cameras watching these girls self destruct. Especially the girl with the twins and one may be sick, there's no reason they should be doing a reality show because we all know how much reality shows help to strain/break up relationships.

    Ughh I hate it too!

Like I could tell that Dr. Drew was trying to be extremely unbiased about the situation since all of the girls' decisions were already made so he was trying to help support their decision. But the fact that the editors tried to pull that sneaky shit, just made me rage. You could tell by the footage they decided to air that they were anti-abortion. I feel like the way they edited it they tried to make it look like she regretted her decision to have an abortion, or that she shouldn't have had one even though their entire situation screamed SHE NEEDS TO GET AN ABORTION since they were already struggling with money, the boyfriend thought the abortion was the best decision and her mom stated that she wouldn't be able to help her support another child.

This made me laugh. And I totally agree with you :p

She missed her dose of birth control. And had unprotected sex =\ Wow. People should be made to pass a recurring responsibility test before they're allowed to have sex.

I mean, I wouldn't hesitate to kill a fetus that was leeching off of my body. Why is deciding to abort such a hard choice? It's like being sad when a fish dies in the bowl and you have to flush it down the toilet. I really don't understand why there is so much drama in the first place.

I really hope there's a girl on the show who gets an abortion and is happy with it. I hate the way the media demonizes women who have abortions and don't feel "OMG IT WAS THE HARDEST DECISION OF MY LIFE" about it. It's so fucking annoying.

    What?
Would it be better for the media to portray abortions like getting botox? Tra la la, oh I'm just on my way to the abortion clinic. Maybe we can go shoe shopping after. I mean, honestly, it's not like looking at the fucking McDonalds menu here, it's deciding whether you want to go ahead and carry around this thing for 9 months that will eventually become a person and have a life and a future, or not to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-choice, and I think often abortions are necessary. I wish the topic wasn't so taboo. But to say, "What's the big deal?" is a little ruthless, even for me. I do know women who have had abortions, and have no regrets, yet still they admit they sometimes wonder what life would be like if they had kept it. Because it WAS a hard choice for them. The only women I know who didn't think having an abortion was a hard choice have actually had multiple abortions and are pretty much the biggest sluts ever.

Of course, in the 5 years I've been sexually active, I've never once gotten accidentally pregnant, so I don't know first hand what a great time abortions really are. Me and the guy I fuck have discussed what would happen if I ever got knocked up, and we don't quite see eye to eye. So, agreeing avoiding pregnancy to be the best option, and also agreeing abstinence is not as fun as fucking, we use birth control and condoms. It's really not that difficult. The instructions are on the little box, there.

Just a bad Catholic's two cents.

Goodness gracious, this made me laugh so hard. I don't even know why. Although, you brought up a good point. I didn't even think about it like that. I guess in reality, that's really the only way MTV can portray it, as since I've already said, so many of their viewers are so impressionable. Like whoever said the thing about the girls TRYING to get pregnant just so they can be only TV. I get you though. As for bad Catholic? We're in the same boat.

No one ever said we wanted abortion to be like getting botox, but at the same time abortion is not always a decision that one has feel remorseful over. Teenick didn't air an episode of Degrassi for like 2 or 3 years just because the main character got an abortion and didn't show remorse/regret for it. I'm against that kind of outward bias being portrayed on tv. I was afraid that they were going to make it out to be "omg this decision is so hard because you're killing a cutiepie widdle baby" and that's exactly what they did in the editing. They kept comparing her clump of cells to her already born and breathing child and wasting time on a pointless argument over semantics. I know women who had abortions and yes I have heard that they often wonder what their life would be like had they kept the child but I also know women who were relieved after their abortion and don't feel sad about it at all. I just really don't agree with is ignoring the fact that some women only feel relief over the termination of an unwanted pregnancy, and not every woman has to feel bad about the decision.

I'm glad that subjects as touchy as these are being brought to light. Though it's going to be incredibly biased (honestly there's not a single channel on Cable that isn't biased) and probably 'wrong' in your opinion, you have to realize that it's not just the networks that are censoring shit like this. I actually like MTV because of how much shit they put on there. Certainly it's not accurate, but at least the information is being put out. The only issue I have with things like this is when ignorant people take it as absolutes. People need to realize that television is ENTERTAINMENT, and you should take no fact from it whatsoever (though there are factual things). That being said, the show was poorly done. Editing fucked with it meh.

I really only like Dr Drew on Love Line, and I usually only like him when he lets loose and makes a joke.

Well, I guess we'll just have to disagree here, because I personally think when people make a mistake that could have been prevented with some forethought, there should be some remorse or some sort of bad feeling when facing the consequences. When you accidentally become pregnant, you either have an abortion, or have a child. I feel both have their fair amount of shame.

Perhaps I feel the problem isn't so much the demonization of abortion so much as the glorification of teen pregnancy we've seen lately. MTV's 16 and Pregnant and Sarah Palin's obnoxious daughter seem to send out this message that you can royally fuck up and "Everything will be okay! No regrets! And look, a precious cute fuckin' rolly polly baby."

I also enjoyed the bad catholic bit... I can truly empathize on that note. :p

I thought you'd like that. Don't forget, God frowns on birth control!

I do understand that at the end of the day it is for entertainment, but I think that they focused so much on the fact that she was pregnant again that they kind avoided a lot of important subject points because the special was only 30 minutes long. I do respect MTV for even airing this though. It's hard to believe they're owned by the same company that owns BET who airs stuff like this.

Is this shit for real? I mean seriously, EL-OH-EL at the guy's face when he said, "Oh..." but really? I don't even think I can come up with words for this yet. Abortion isn't a fucking crime. Again, they're not killing anything because something has to be alive to die. So no, that probably isn't the number one cause of African American death. Plus, if anyone that wasn't black saw that, what would they begin to think about African Americans? That ad is all-around wrong.
