Oprah is an idiot that promotes crap, and crap.
Also, crap.

I have to agree.

The few times I've watched her program, it made me feel a lot like I do watching an episode of 'Montel' with that Sylvia Browne loon.

Oprah uses her position in society to promote all sorts of pseudoscience bull-shit. I can't admire her for that.

Think you are ignoring a lot of people here...

Patrice Motsepe, Aliko Dangote, Mohammed Al Amoudi... and Mo Ibrahim?

    Sorry, she's both a billionaire, and she's a philanthropist?
    One or the other.

You can't expect me to respect someone's contributions to charity, when it doesn't even match her yearly interest.

You kinda have to be at least a multi-millionaire to be considered a philanthropist...there's no problem with being both at the same time, just look at Gates or Buffet...those guys give millions each year...and pledged about half their fortune after they die

Yeah, I don't buy that, either.

They skim a little off for PR. That's it.

Then who would you consider to be a philanthropist? Somebody who gets rich then gives it all away?

I consider people who spend significant amounts of their time and/or money on charitable efforts philanthropists.
They don't have to be rich.

So, how exactly do you define a philanthropist? Also, people you'd consider as such?

Thank you for repeating the same question he just answered...

Anyways, that seems like that's a valid definition of a philanthropist......i guess i just viewed a philanthropist more as like a rockefeller or gates type...

I'm sure if they interviewed adolescents or young adults... Lada Gaga would be #1 in both the Male and Female category.

    She'd get my vote.

I cannot stand Oprah. I can think of absolutely no reason to like her. The woman might be disgustingly rich, but she has NO CLASS. She is fucking rude. "Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh." says Oprah, whilst her guest is speaking. She'll interrupt people. She'll look at the camera and say, "OOOOOOkaaaaaaay." like it's cute or funny. The Oprah Effect causes all kinds of pains the every day person. A precise example being the year she told her guests how amazing Airborne is. There was absolutely no way for retailers to keep the shit in stock, so we had hundreds of middle aged white women cussing us out for not having what they saw on Oprah. And for whatever reason, she constantly treats her friend Gale like crap.
    And she's fat.
And she will always be fat.

Why is Condoleezza Rice so high? I mean, sure she was the first black Sec.of State, but i don't remember any memorable achievements, and she's disappeared after bush left office.

The people in her audience when she gives away all that stuff love her....I guess people view her as a role model for what they want inter-city kids to become...I really don't like or dislike her, she's just there, taking up space

Oprah has been donating money for years, last year al. She's helped put African girls through school who wouldn't even have that chance otherwise. The Oprah Angel network has helped build ~300 homes for people who lost their homes in Katrina and they donate to schools. Just because she's rich doesn't mean she's not a philanthropist. Anyone can just donate money, but she not only donates money but continues to raise money to help people. And she's donated more money to charity than any other entertainer in America. *~*~*~*~

So much space in fact, that you might call it milky way (no pun intended, though the candy bars are simply deliciouzz)

Actually, Oprah being up there isn't as bad as Sarah Palin. I mean really???

It's a non-scientific poll....i mean, if they had more republicans than democrats, then it would shift it towards palin....however, i really hope that this was just a sampling error

Aung San Suu Kyi, I'm fine with. After all, you gotta admire a stick lady who dares to stand up for freedom against a retentive government.
And you guys are missing this...

I find this less believable than Palin being on the poll at all.

It's all PR. The people that are actual philantropists do it because the want to, not because it makes them look better. Why the hell do you think it's called the Oprah Angel network?

Also, that shit was from 5 years ago. And cool, she's donated more than any entertainer. We're not denouncing her contributions, but considering it's a small percent of what she makes, you can hardly compare her to people that have worked their lives without making any money for the betterment of others.

She makes 300 mil a year. In the past 2 or 3 years she's donated 250 mil. And we don't even know if/how many private contributions she's made because they're private. So all we can really do is quote the public ones. If it's not made public then how do you know who's a "real philanthropist" she's helping people, and that's all that should really matter in the end.

How many of those donations are written off?

Cool, she's helping people, I'm not denying that. But she's not a philantropist.

Sarah Palin isn't a national leader though. She didn't even finish her term as governor.
