The people in her audience when she gives away all that stuff love her....I guess people view her as a role model for what they want inter-city kids to become...I really don't like or dislike her, she's just there, taking up space

Have you ever been in her audience? I've yet to meet a single person who has got free shit from her, and I doubt I ever will.

People pay a thousand dollars+ to get tickets, and get what in return? Something fucking stupid.

Oprah has been donating money for years, last year al. She's helped put African girls through school who wouldn't even have that chance otherwise. The Oprah Angel network has helped build ~300 homes for people who lost their homes in Katrina and they donate to schools. Just because she's rich doesn't mean she's not a philanthropist. Anyone can just donate money, but she not only donates money but continues to raise money to help people. And she's donated more money to charity than any other entertainer in America. *~*~*~*~

Really? 300 homes? I've helped build more then that as part of community service. I personally built over 400 homes in the last three years. No. She donates according to that list, 18% of her net worth. I donated 25% last year. HOW THE FUCK IS SHE BETTER THEN ME? She makes more money, and gives less of it away, and shes better then everyone else?

You like her because she rich, black, and a woman. And you will only like her because of that.

Damn, I am seriously surprised Michael Jackson isn't on the list, considering when he died - several people performed self-annihilating acts after the news. I thought he was more influential and admired than someone like Bill Gates, but I guess the followers of the said pseudo-paedophile-fag, didn't vote.

I consider people who spend significant amounts of their time and/or money on charitable efforts philanthropists.
They don't have to be rich.

I think that's a pretty decent definition, and I'll support it with a very good example (in my opinion):

    http://www.bbc.co.uk...gazine-11950843

He gets paid ~£25,000 per year and gives over a third of that to charity.

I think this song pretty much sums up everyone's reaction to his death.
It's pretty vulgar though, so sensitive people shuffle along now. Nothing to see.

Hell, I have a classmate who was all "Oh, now we'll never hear MJ again." I lol'd, because 1) we're 17, and 2) we weren't alive when MJ was hip and happening.

Let me reassure you that I agree with you in the Sarah Palin department. I'm just saying that she did effectively hijack the Tea Party Movement and spearheaded herself into crazy popularity over it. She is certainly one to be admired by conservative women just for having her voice heard and "being strong" through all the personal attacks on her and her family.

God no, Palin's not even close to being Hitler. For one, forgetting whatever he did, he was actually a pretty good politician, as in taking advantage of the times to gain power. He was also a pretty good speaker, and the time period during which he gained power was very advantageous for someone like him; i.e. really bad economy, just lost a war, anger at foreign countries, etc.

Just to be clear, I despise Hitler and everything he did.

Oh, come on, stop being so melodramatic. You know there's no similarity between the two. For one thing Palin's a dumbass whore while Adolf was actually a pretty smart guy.

I'm pretty sure the median age was probs like 60.

What pisses me off the most is that Sarah fucking Palin is #2. What has she contributed to America? She didn't even serve a full term as governor (where women were made to pay for their own rape kits btw) and she wants to run for president? The chick who said "the government tries to tell us what kind of lightbulbs to use" and has a reality show on TLC, is number 2? The fact that this basic bitch being taken seriously makes me want to move.

To think that TLC wants another season of her -_- I still can't understand what exactly has she done.

If you're using a 3rd party broker, sure. Doesn't change the fact the tickets are initially free.

He's getting at the fact that Oprah does not charge for tickets to her show. Just because some people do pay or them doesn't detract from her genorosity, as she is not the one profitting.

I know :p The point was to make him be clearer.

I get why a lot of people dig Oprah. She started from nothing and has built this huge empire. It's inspiring to people.
I just personally can't stand Oprah. Maybe it's because she's rich, black, and a woman.

Please quote where I ever said she gave more than you? I'm against people saying she's not a philanthropist when she is by the very definition. And I know people who've gotten stuff from Oprah. A friend of mine wrote Oprah because she was named after her and she's a foster child and Oprah gave her a scholarship. Just because you don't know people who've gotten stuff from Oprah doesn't mean she doesn't privately help people. Take the stick out of your ass.

However, some believe the purpose of philanthropy is often tribute and self-aggrandizement, as arguably shown by the prevalence of self-titled foundations, rarity of large anonymous donations, and lack of support for unpalatable causes such as the treatment of diarrhea (which despite being easily treatable is the second leading cause of infant death worldwide.)

I would hardly think building 30 homes, giving kids scholarships and donating cars qualifies her to be on the same level as Bono (who is trying to rid third world countries of their debt) or you know Warren Buffett's 31 billion dollar donation to the Gates Foundation, which is trying to help eradicate malaria.

phi·lan·thro·pist: one who makes an active effort to promote human welfare
There's no rank in the definition. No one is saying that Oprah is the only philanthropist, or the best philanthropist to ever live and everyone should love her. I'm just saying that she helps people, she donates a lot of money, she's helped people's lives and that by definition makes her a philanthropist. Whether or not YOU believe she isn't one BY YOUR DEFINITION is irrelevant.

I'm aware of the definition of philanthropist. Believe me, I'm one of the last people you want to argue semantics with.

I'm going to use an extreme example here, but regardless it is still applicable.

The definition of a police officer, or a cop is

A man/woman who is a member of a police force

However, would you say that a traffic cop is on the same level as that of a DEA agent? That a 60 year old pulling people over is on the same level as someone who is on SWAT? Sure, by definition they're both cops. But I wouldn't classify the first as actual police officers.

    Another example is an athlete.
The definition of an athlete is

A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

By definition, both a 5 year old playing tee ball, Mark McGuire & Derek Jeter are considered athletes. However, few would call a 5 year old an athlete, moreso would call McGuire an athlete but denounce him for his drug use, and Derek Jeter is at the pinnacle of what we consider an athlete.

So yes, by the dictionary definition, Oprah is a philanthropist. But in my book, she is not, and it is completely relevant to the discussion what I feel.

It's just one's own definition of what a philanthropist is. One person can see it as like a Buffet or Gates, giving away billions to help the world, and another can see it as the person at the soup kitchen, volunteering their time to help the needy or Doctors without Borders/Peace Corps. They're all trying to help the world, just in different ways

    Thank you.

Whether or not she does as much as Buffet or Mother Theresa it doesn't change the fact that she's been miles more helpful/influential to the world than Sarah fucking Palin.

    Exactly.
One of them is trying to help the world by helping the world, and one of them is trying to help the world by boosting their public profile.

I also don't remember arguing anything as far as helpfulness/influence compared to Sarah Palin, so I really don't know why that was brought up.
