Been there done that.

I moved here in Mount Vernon, Washington about 3-4 years ago.

My first friend I got here was Sara.

Right off the bat it was as if we were friends for all our lives.

We finished each others sentences had some of the most inside jokes two people could have.

It was natural that I started to like her.

After a few weeks of harmless flirting with each other I decided to pop the question.

She said no.

Love is a bitch.

Know how you feel man. And I sympathize.

Ouch, that sucks, had an experience like that. New girl at work, hit it off, flirting etc. etc.

Asked her out...

No.

Indeed. They should say 'Yes' no matter how they actually feel, just to spare your pride.
Why is friendship never enough for some people?

No. They toy with your feelings by flirting and acting like they like you, because it makes them feel better to know that someone likes them.

Well, of course that's true. Humans are very shallow, self-indulgent creatures. But. Just because we have misjudged someone else's intentions doesn't always mean it's entirely their fault. You can't tell me you haven't ever flirted with someone you had little or no interest in pursuing. Or when you flirt with someone you mean it with your entire heart, being, and soul?

Anyway. I think it sucks you've been depressed. I'm just not very comforting. The best I ever do for people is give them a pat and go "There, there." Somehow, I don't think that ever helps, really.

I knew a girl once. She flirted with this dude non-stop, knew he was nuts about her, and got him to do her entire Bachelor's thesis. Yep, some girls are bitches  Huge bitches.

But, people flirt just for the Hell of it. The problem arises when one of them is like "Holy crap, I actually mean this shit".

The best thing to do is break into her house in the middle of the night :ninja: (or day, no matter) and read her diary. Or you might find it online under some emo handle on LiveJournal.

And then you can stop obsessing ;)

I can honestly say that I have never flirted with someone with having some form of feelings for them as more then a friend.

And you played piano for unigirl when she was sad :(

Wow. Sorry to just butt in here, but I can honestly say that I never flirted with anyone that I couldn't see myself with or find myself pursuing later. However, maybe this is just a statement on my standards ;) But I feel like I see girls do it all the time, just because they feel like they need the attention of they want to stand out as the "hot one" in the group. Then again, I'm sure there ARE guys that do this, but probably the majority of people that do it (and get away with it) are female.

So what you're saying is guys typically only flirt with girls with the intention of getting in their pants. Thanks for the insight. So now when some guy makes a flirty comment to me, I know he's not trying to be flattering, he's seeing himself pursuing me for some sort of longtime relationship and now I know I have to tell him to go fuck himself or else he'll think I feel some romantic feelings towards him. I better stop making eye contact with the guys at work, I don't want to give them the idea that I want to have their babies.

    Good grief, boys.
I'm not saying that leading people on is right. But there is a difference between harmless admiration and lusting for someone.
    :p

Oh. Okay. I don't remember it like that. I just remember being bored with the lack of conversation, but if it happened the way you say, it's comforting to know I'm not as uncaring as I perceive myself to be.

See how much you fail to grasp what guys believe whenever you flirt with them? Excessive eye contact/touching. Lots of laughing at what they say, and various other flirting things, always tell a guy that you are interested. Depending on who, they will want in your pants, or want to date you. 99% of guys do not flirt just to flirt. We dont work that way.

    Speak for yourself.

I definitely find myself "flirting" with nearly any woman who comes across me. I always thought I was just being polite and charming... but it seems everyone else calls that flirting. I can say that 98% of the women I've flirted with I had NO interest in getting in their pants.

I agree with PRBM's analysis on the issue. :p

Flirting with the intention to bed is only setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. On the other hand, flirting as a base trait of your personality creates opportunities, which then allow you to pick and choose.

    No, have realistic expectations.

Don't approach a girl with the intentions of making her wifey.

I actually think this is a pretty good way to go ;)

From the first line of the wikipedia article on flirting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flirting

Flirting is a playful, romantic or sexual overture by one person to another subtly indicating an interest in a deeper relationship with the other person, and can involve verbal comunications as well as body language.

I guess the term "deeper relationship" is what needs to be defined here, but yes, if a guy is flirting, TRULY flirting, they're either trying to get in your pants and become your boyfriend. I don't think there's any way around it.
