Have you ever had moments where you've met someone in school and just wondered how the hell they're getting through the system?

The spoiler tags basically contains a long bitchfest about the fucking privileged morons that attend my school. And how my university (and other universities) are enabling these people to be racist, sexist, and homophobic against minority students.

Honestly, there's a difference between free speech and spreading hatred.

really i believe the more attention you give to these people the more reason they have to continue to do it

we have a preacher that comes to our campus throughout the week who is basically a crazy bigot
but the thing is that everyone stands around him and tries to argue with him
what for? i have no idea - do you really think you are going to stop this guy or change his mind - that is just ignorant.

the fact is that if no one stood around and listened to him or gave him the time of day he would have no one to talk to
    and thus either be:
    a) a looney yelling at no one
    b) a looney somewhere else

most likely option a would soon progress to option b, but no one seems to get that

Everything that you believe in life, is because of what you were taught/told. Regardless of its true or not, you believe it is, and think anyone that believes differently as stupid.

For instance. Anyone who thought the earth was round, used to be called insane/stupid by everyone. Yet they were not. Intelligence is entirely subjective.

By judging, you make yourself as bad as, or worse then they are.

it is very unfortunate that this kind of material is being spread around, but hate speech IS protected speech. (Look at the recent supreme court case Snyder v. Phelps. A group of people stood outside of a military funeral shouting that god hates fags and that god killed their son because america promotes gays, etc. OUTSIDE OF A FUNERAL! The supreme court ruled 8-1 in favor of the hateful people (Westboro Baptist Church) that hate speech is still protected speech.)

The problem here isn't with the law protecting hate speech... the problem is with the hate itself. If you want to combat the problem, I suggest that you spread speech about love and equality. Show people the 'right' thing to do by living it. Show people that they are wrong. Attempting to stop them from spreading their hate is silly... you have to stop the hate itself.

Become a part of the solution!

Best of luck to you and the all of the people with hatred in their hearts. :(

I'm black for race. My school percent is 47% Black 22% Hispanic 21%White 7% Asian 3% American Indian or Other.
Some of these kids look like the fucking New Orlean Saints football team. Like seriously and they're the ones in the back of the bus with weed in a inhaler smoking it.

I LOL'd in Gym today. Some of these nerds still DO NOT know how to shoot a basketball correctly.

    Btw I'm in Highschool.

I have ripped it in front of them. The kid called me a Black bitch. There's nothing the school can do because our campus is a free speech area. But it genuinely bugs me that they harass people to take their paper, and then get pissed when people rip it up or throw it away. There are plenty of dedicated readers so it bugs me when they harass people who don't want their paper.

really i believe the more attention you give to these people the more reason they have to continue to do it

We have preachers who come to our campus also. We also have two women who come to campus just to scream at girls that they're whores and yell at us to put clothes on. I usually do ignore those people but the main problem I have in this paper is that it does promote date rape and violence against women, it does promote minorities being second class citizens and it does promote homophobia and violence against gays. The biggest issue I have is that someone will read this paper and use is at an excuse to commit an act of violence against a minority on campus. We've already had problems in the past with people writing hate speech on our bathroom walls against ethnic minorities, and lgbtq students.

What we've decided to do is work on a diversity forum. A lot of our students know absolutely nothing about diversity and social justice. What we've decided to do was create a diversity forum and we're trying to make the diversity forum mandatory for first year students.

We don't have any laws against hate speech. I wish we did. Other countries have laws against hate speech and they do fine. But here "NO IT'S A SLIPPERY SLOPE, FIRST THING YOU'RE BANNING HATE SPEECH THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW THE GOVERNMENT WILL TAKE AWAY ALL YOUR SPEECH, SEW YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND DUB OVER YOUR VOICE*~*~*~" It's ridiculous.

We've been repeating over and over again to students reminding them not to react with violence because the guy who owns the koala has a lawyer for a dad and they'll obviously sue.

There's no law against suppressing what they want to say. And that's great, I'm all for it. But there are laws against harassing people. Which is what you said they're doing. So why can't you guys report them to the police or campus security?

Well you said they call people "dirty mexicans" that's verbal assault....although it's definitely not enough for the cops to get involved; it's could be enough to get rid of them as a school organization...

    So very wrong

Hate speech is, outside the law, any communication that disparages a person or a group on the basis of some characteristic such as race or sexual orientation.[1][2] In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. T

What they voted, was that this was not hate speech, because it did not incite any violence. It was people expressing their views. Hate speech is not protected by freedom of speech.

So you are attempting to argue that the Westboro Baptist Church screaming "God Hates Fags", "God hates America", and "Your son is going to burn in hell!" at a funeral are not hateful things to say?

Check out page 10 of the opinion written by Justice Stevens in Snyder v. Phelps (2011) (located here. (PDF) (Direct quote for you)

As a general matter, the fact that society may find speech offensive is not a sufficient reason for suppressing it. Speech that is called hateful, or speech that is unpopular, or speech with which you may strongly disagree, may still be protected speech.

Please provide a more recent supreme court hearing than the decision handed down in Snyder v. Phelps that was issued 8-1 a mere week or two ago that proves to the contrary before you blindly insist that I am "Wrong." :)

I'm not saying prejudice is a good thing..i'm saying it can be good for people. If people really get that upset over what others say to them, they have no idea what is coming to them. I have faced being called a chink or good many times. I was never bothered by it. Words are words. The more people are exposed to prejudice, they more they learn to handle. Face it, not everyone will pamper everyone with love, it's a fact. Chances are if there were to be rules set regaurding prejudice at this school, they are going to face it somewhere else anyways. Yes it's immature, yes its dumb, and no it's not right. But I think bad things help people better themselves.

Yeah? I don't see how it's so hard to comprehend. You may want to be more open to other peoples' thoughts. Just a thought

Also i'm not saying i support, i clearly said I don't think it's a good thing. I'm just saying it can be beneficial in a twisted way.

There's not need to get angered lol. I 'm not supporting it. I'm just looking at it realistically. Obviously the situation in which no one in the world discriminated everyone would be ideal. But that's not going to happen. The way I see it is that the more people are dealt with a bad situation, the better they are going to handle it. People learn through experience. I would not want my kid to go through the first 20 years of his/her life without and discrimination, then have someone say something discriminitory towards them and have be obnoxiously upset. Also , if someone is saying these things to people they are not going to change. So any sort of punishment would have no effect on their behavior. Nor would it help the target feel any better. So it almost pointless to do anything about it. I'm an open minded person, you can tell me why you think I'm wrong instead of just saying it.

just because i told you in an image to shut the fuck up doesn't mean i am angry
that was just a little functional comedy in case people wanted to skim they could get the jist of my post without having to read it

if you read the original post it was noted that the person stated they were worried others (aka not the people writing the paper) would use it as an excuse/fuel particular actions. the proliferation of such media in society allows others to feel comfortable acting in a certain way - it acts as a way to reinforce people's ignorance and bigotry. now do i think that everyone who picks up this paper is going to go out and participate in hate crimes - no not really - but the more desensitized people become to these things. i don't worry about a few random people writing a paper full of hate, i worry about the indifference that could ensue because of it.

i am not really sure how old you are, but stating that you would WANT your child to be bullied because of their race, gender, or sexual orientation is beyond me and only reflects on your immaturity.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions. Anyway, I'm not saying I want them to be discriminated against. I'm saying it's going to happen at some point in their lives. Example. People that endure a lot of physical pain are more likely to have a tolerance to it. So the way I see it, people that face a lot of discrimination are more likely to have a sort of tolerance to it than others are. Discrimination is bound to happen everywhere. Again, I would prefer that no one faces any sort of it. But that's just not realistic.
