I can't believe there still hasn't been a topic on this! What will happen to Apple?!?! I'm sure the iPhone 5 will blast the competition out of the water and business will continue as usual... for now. How can investors feel about this change?

Last time I checked a few days ago, I believe I saw Apple was the #1 company in the U.S. (Higher market value than Exxon!)

It's late... just finished an 18 hour day. About to PTFO... just thought I'd start the discussion.

On a somewhat related note, I think I'm going to try to sell my iPhone 4 on ebay for like $400 and just get the 5 with contract in a few weeks... :p

Oh, I've been talking about it with the staff all day. :p I should have made a topic, but meh.

This is kind of interesting, and sort of concerning since I doubt Steve Jobs would issue this hasty statement (on a Wednesday to boot!) unless it being absolutely necessary.

There's a iPhone 5 now? The iPhone it self came out like 3 years ago didn't it? They're releasing it like software versions =P

They have to, to compete the with multitude of Android and Blackberry phones out there. There's only one current iPhone model at any one time, whereas there are probably dozens of competitor phones out there.

As far as Apple goes, I don't see any specific changes happening soon as a result of Jobs' departure. Probably we'll see some competitively priced netbooks released, and new releases in the desktop department as well as the 'gadget' field, populated by iPads and the like. But as to specifics, who knows? Apple is notoriously tight-lipped.

It's a shame they can't just make one reliable resilient phone and support it. What's worse is people keep buying the new ones.....

Ive had an iPhone 3 for about 18 months now and havent had a single problem with it. Meanwhile, I hear ever other person complaining about their HTC, Nokias, etc., so your criticism is a tad unfair in my opinion. Just seems like more Apple slander :p Though I do agree how shameful it is that people (like OP) rush in to purchase the latest apple gizmo. If I were to purchase a new phone at the moment it wouldnt be an iPhone.

Back on topic, it is a shame, and I hope its not a sign of just how bad his declining health may be. Regardless of whether or not you like Apple, theres no denying that Steve Jobs is a great innovator, and an even better business strategist :p

I've never been impressed enough with the iPhone, or any Apple computer for that matter, to be willing to pay that much to use it. 'Nuff said.

That's what I mean though. The product I'm sure is reliable enough. A few people I know had minor issues with it but for the most part it's a great product. They don't really need to keep releasing new ones all the time to compete. If they really wanted to they could advertise and market some new colors or some lame cosmetic shit, because that's essentially what the new models are anyway...

I'm not sure they're as innovative as their patent claims suggest. :p What they have been good at, however, is taking existing (but currently not very popular) devices and making them desirable and then building upon that. The iPad and iPhone and iPod Touch were all natural extensions of the original iPod, it'll be interesting to see where they go to after that line of products starts to wane.

People will complain about anything. We have had someone complain about the Program Manager because they liked Abrosia being standalone better. Sometimes you just have to ignore them.

What you fail to understand is that they are actually withholding features to implement in future versions to force people to update. Did you know that the first version of the Iphone couldn't even send MMS messages? Apple makes more from the sheer stupidity of their consumers, then they make from the quality of their product.

Regardless, in the coming weeks, buy a shiftfuckton of apple stock. It will go back up and you will make some easy money.

I posted a status update after it happened. Didn't have time to post though. :p Make sure you sell your iphone 4 before the new one is announced. The price will drop like a rock once they five is on the horizon.

Why do you say it was a hasty statement? He may have had it planned for weeks. :p They already had a succession plan in order and he wanted to release the statement before the iphone 5 was announced so that it over shadows his departure. He resigned late in the day, most likely to try and ease the stock fluctuation. (announcements during after hour trading tend to be less damaging. )

They have to, to compete the with multitude of Android and Blackberry phones out there. There's only one current iPhone model at any one time, whereas there are probably dozens of competitor phones out there.

They currently sell two iPhone models and support three.

It's a shame they can't just make one reliable resilient phone and support it. What's worse is people keep buying the new ones.....

because the new ones keep getting better. :p Better camera, better displays, faster processors, more capabilities ( such as multitasking ) People have to keep up with the Joneses.

People will complain about anything. We have had someone complain about the Program Manager because they liked Abrosia being standalone better. Sometimes you just have to ignore them.

You can't ignore them! Just gotta recognize that their opinion isn't necessarily the correct one or in the best interest of the company/organization/site.

What you fail to understand is that they are actually withholding features to implement in future versions to force people to update. A little arrogant to say that apple makes more from the stupidity of consumers than from quality when you look at BOE numbers on devices. For AT&T the iPhone 3GS is one of the highest selling phones yet compared to say the HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse, or Motorola Atrix the return numbers are incredibly lower.

If a device sells 10 to 15 times more volume but has less returns do to buyers remorse or defective devices which would you say is the better product? The iPhone is clearly the better product.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks for the pick me up :)

I don't think Cody understands the difference between market value and market cap. Apple had the highest market cap for a few moments. Several companies have higher market value. :p

Jobs has already been on leave since January I believe so it's not like anything other than possible morality should be affected. Doesn't matter to me either way, the newest Apple electronic I have is 3 years old now :)

So your argument against them abusing the stupidity of their consumers, is that the people don't return it? Considering that these people picked a phone that lacks one of the -very- basic functions that phones have had for the last 20 years. I doubt they would know if their phone was good or not. They just want a shiny iphone from Apple, so they are cool.

this. most people have absolutely no real use for a smartphone beyond having a shiny toy. branding matters more to these people than features, because having the product from the hip brand will do more to raise their self-image and their peers' perceptions of them than having the product with the best features. extends to clothing, cars, etc.

I'm intrigued to see what impact this will have on the company itself, the share price fell by over 6% since he announced his resignation. One person shouldn't represent a company but I do wonder, if in this case, it does. I work for a bank and although it has over 100,000 employees when it all went tits up it was one persons blood the public wanted. I think it's interesting to see how people perceive a company!

Well done drawing a conclusion that is neither here nor there in my original message. Most phones these days are free when you bundle them with plans. Almost everyone carries around a smartphone, and as common as they are, nobody really cares what model anybody else is carrying. Shit, it stays in your pocket most of the time.

They're hardly a symbol of material wealth in the real world.

If this hasn't been mentioned already, I probably should. By buying from Apple your are helping increase the US deficit because Apple offshores all production.

Just an interesting tidbit, not that I care very much about the economic state of a country that I don't live in.
