A Brazilian woman has given birth to a two-headed baby boy and doctors say the newborn appears to be in good health. Maria de Nazare has decided to name the pair, who share a heart, lungs, liver and pelvis, Emanoel and Jesus.

Healthy two-headed baby born in Brazil

I've heard of joined at the head but never 2 in 1 body where there are two functioning brains

I've heard and read an article about a pair of conjoined twins where they lived to ~80 years old :p~~

It'll be hard for them growing up though given that society will point them out as "different" and will either be feared and/or made fun of :x

Edit: Well, hopefully some people won't mistreat them, but I can say that honestly, I'd probably have some trouble not being creeped out/etc. by a pair of conjoined twins

Wow.....I wish the mother, and her child/children (don't know what the appropriate thing to say is here), a lot of luck & love in their lives.

God knows that him/they're going to become outcasts, and have the general public harass them as they grow up :(

I really wonder how the mother reacted to the news when they first told her.

That's so strange. I'm really curious on how it would work physiologically - if both brains are active, which one is controlling things like breathing and heartbeat if they share the same heart and lungs?

THIS!! The only other case of this sort of conjoined twin status i read was where there were two sets of organs but one was essentially non-functional. The twins (sad to say) did not survive past age 3 because the body was unable to keep up with energy demand/functions.

The difference here being that there is only one set of organs, but two brains and spinal cords. This makes me wonder about the long-term viability of this child(ren). Operating to separate them does not seem like an option, as too many organs are shared.

Right, I dont think separating them is an option, as that would mean that one of the twins would most likely die. Just from a scientific standpoint, this is a very interesting case. I am very curious to see what the parents decide to do and how society reacts to them. I heard a story of a baby born with extra arms in India and she was revered as being the reincarnation of a goddess or something.

Is it bad the first thing that came to my mind was "god I hope she had a c-section?" I'm terrible, but at least she did indeed have them that way! *trolly face*

Why is that terrible? Seems to me that's safest for all concerned.

No, that was the second thing that came to my mind. The first was www.snopes.com.

Holy shit that's crazy! I honestly hope the child/ren live long enough to where doctors and scientists can examine them. While it might seem like a cruel life, I personally see them as a great study tool. This might bring a new light on the subject of personality (which I am sorta studying). As someone said before, who controls the movements of the body? Who controls breathing? Do they each have a different personality?

So many questions can be asked by this, and I really hope we find out the answers eventually. I'm just glad they are in a stable condition.

    This is quite confusing.

They classify it as one baby at first by saying "Two Headed Baby Born", but yet it has 2 names, and they say it has two functioning brains, etc.

So is it one baby with two heads, or two baby with one body? Posted Image

I am thinking two babies with one body. The babies are classified as a set of conjoined twins, so they would have been two separate babies if not for the fusion (or incomplete fission depending on your thoughts on conjoining) in the womb.

That's a whole new can of worms... there's no way each can have a healthy sex/love life... i mean i know its way too early to think about it but if they survive, eventually they'll fall in love and wanna do the horizontal tango...:lookaround:

So apparently abbey and brittney only have one vagina and uterus... soooooo....? =/
But if they had kids the kids really would have 2 moms, thats kinda cool.
But I agree Sweeney, the dude is more than likely some freak-a-leak.

On the topic of whether to pluralize the baby or not-
..I'm not sure cX~~ I feel like if you were to talk about the twins you'd refer to them as 'they,' so technically since there are two of them it should be 'babies', but since there's only one body.. idunno O_o

edit: oh cool brittney is engaged!
    but... how does that work?

o3o Oh gosh, that would be incredibly awkward.. /unless they both like the guy I guess? o:/
