I think we need a rigorous and universally agreed definition, so that people stop bandying the term about as an excuse not to engage in a valid discussion.

What do you think?

How can we develop an accurate and relatively simple set of criteria for indentifying trolling?

Is it, even, necessary to depersonalise the definition and apply it to a style of post(ing), rather than simply labelling a member a "troll"?

Discuss.

I don't think this even needs to be dignified with an answer.

The replies to this thread are brilliant. Soon, I'll be forced to conclude that no one gives a shit about "trolling", and anyone who brings it up from now on is simply showing a sign of intellectual cowardice...

Good trolling died a few years ago. The term troll is now overused by amateurs who think that obvious, repetitive spamming is trolling when in reality that's a function of low iq behavior.

The mark of a good troll is suppose to leave the reader wondering whether or not he is serious or trolling.

Thus, the only real criterion to identify a troll is to automatically disqualify anyone who proclaim themselves trolls.

I don't know what trolling is

But I certainly do know what trolling is not

I see the word used all over the place on this forum (admittedly the only forum I frequent) in many different contexts and it makes me think no one really understands what they are saying. One of the most disappointing things is to see someone say "no trolling please" or call someone a troll for disagreeing with them or starting a rash debate.

    Flaming != trolling

Occasionally I go on pound chat and post things like "I know it's a bit of an over-offer, but my speckled grarrl for your UC plushie shoyru?" just because I hate most of the stuck up snobs there and want to piss them off.

Would that be considered 'trolling'? ;)

I'd see a troll as an individual who is purposely either:

a.) Using derogatory terms towards other individuals to either anger them or upset them, but more so just to get a response out of them for it.

    or

b.) Acting like a complete idiot towards a subject to conjure guaranteed replies from other people, often in anger.

    This.

"trolling" has become a fad, and nobody knows how to do it. And then, when an old school troll comes along, they are like "ummm wat". Mind = blown.

This is the closest definition apart from Scot's.

Trolling is acting in a certain way to provoke an argument or simply confuse the hell out of people.

Trolling is definitely not flaming; flaming is flat out insulting someone with the intention of making that person feel sad.

Edit: I think I need my Member Title should be "YUSOEDIT?"

This, I figured I better edit my first point, because it sounded more like flaming than just trolling.

A troll is a supernatural being found in Norse mythology. Often found in desolate caves and mountains, but can be currently found under bridges. In fact a fossilized troll can be seen under a bridge in Seattle

I consider a troll to be someone who is a prick for seemingly no reason. They are the people who will blatantly attack someone to take the conversation off topic, because they don't like the person, because they don't like the thought (but can't think of a good rebuttal), or because they got the sudden, overwhelming urge to be an attention whore. Usually this leads to confusion and anger.

    Sometimes it leads to hilarity.

I'd define a troll as Scot said earlier. Someone who posts leave people wondering if they're serious or not.
Troll conversations are fun to follow. =]
