Instead of going through freenode, have you ever toyed with the idea of running your own IRC server? You can definitely have your own server setup easily and will have more control over it.

I tried nagging the admins to do it, and had already started working with ircd to get things setup; but there isnt THAT much of a benifit to it. If more people joined irc and used it more regularly, im sure we could integrate IRC and Neocodex to a point where services could be used, such as instant message notifications of events, topic replies and other such events.
