This thread is for the discussion of your internet roots. Many of us come from a different website community and didn't originate here at Codex, this is your opportunity to give some back story to yourself and allow other users to see you in a potentially different light. If Codex is the first community you've ever truly been a part of then discuss how it was when you first joined, what experiences you've had, and any other interesting tid-bits you feel pertain to your community experience over the years.

(If you're not going to actually participate in this thread by giving your own back story and discussing others then please just move on. A crisp, clean, hate-free thread would be nice.)

Here is my back story:

I actually joined the site muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch before i became active.

I remeber squabbling with someone named "California" because they would always post useless things on my statuses :L We both got warned by SL but never got in trouble xD

I think the reason why i stayed was because SL was always really helpful when i asked stuff in the IRC ^_^

This is the story goes of how I got here. Started neopets when I was like 8 > decided I wanted to cheat > joined 3volutionize > became (s)mod > made an account here because Pete from slopdog told me that someone from this site was going to DDOS 3vo > PMed Hydro > turned to be a fluke > overthrew Vega (the idiot Admin of 3vo) > got banned > came here permanently.

Ehehehe! Things all started on Neopets, and from there I found Suta Raito and the oekakies there, which eventually lead me to ED (sigh, didn't stay there long though, thankfully...), then 4chan, which lead to many different things! And then years later, after rediscovering Neopets and getting frozen for hurp buying neopoints, I found this wonderful little site~ ♥

And gosh, my first community... It wasn't Codex, heheh! Back in early 2009, I was just messing around on /v/ when I saw a thread about this little game project called Pokemon V. It sounded like it had a lot of potential, the devs talking in the thread seemed really nice, so I made an account on the forum there and started posting away! It was the first forum community I was actually apart of, so I didn't really get what to do or anything, so I just started lurking and eventually stopped going thanks to holidays being distracting and all. A few months after coming back, I got an email saying that the project was starting to get back on it's feet and that it has it's own website now, so I thought I'd go back and see how things were going!
After talking in the new forum for a bit, one of the members told me to visit their IRC channel, and then all sorts of amazing things happened from there~ For months on end, there was just so much chatter and discussion about anything and everything, trying our best and working hard on the game for the new demo, or just messing around and having fun playing video games or watching the resident artist draw nonstop, and just so much more.. It's hard to explain, and some people just can't accept that something this simple could have such an affect on one person, but the project and everyone who worked on it changed my life so much ^^ The years I spent with them easily had some of the best times in my life in it. However, three years down the road, only me and five other people are in the IRC channel.. Sure, I still get in touch with a lot of people who worked on it on WLM/Facebook but it just isn't the same. Drama, lack of devs and school/work really gave the project a beating :c It's been in hiatus for the past year and a half and I'm the only one working on it now. Very, very slowly. But it's getting there! Slowly :p
But recently, there have been a couple of threads on /v/ about it, and it seems people are still hyped about it! So I'll just have to keep trying my best until I really do need more people to help out with it, so good luck me and future devs!~

The past almost decade has been so much fun for me! ^^ Yay internet!!

Neofreaks, huge member brought in IRL friends. Neocodex, 3vo, slopdog, iceyneo, others on the side for programs and info Neofreaks didn't have. Neofreaks is pretty dead now and no one plays Neopets. We mostly just talk to keep up to date with each other. Now I'm here for Neopets and this is my main forum. 05-til I die

OMG, I love Twilight, too! We should RP in irc some time, but only if I get to be Edward or Charlie. Because they're my favorites.

My escapades on the internet started in 1999, when I posted regularly on the WB's Pokemon forums (where I was called punkrockbigmouth). There, I met a good friend who later introduced me to Neopets, who stayed with me through my various interests until she got married a few years ago and we slowly started growing apart. I still keep in touch with her to this day, though not as often as I should.

After the WB changed the layout of the forum, I left and I ran my own fansite for a musical group I liked. The site included a an ezboard, which I maintained by myself at the age of 16 years old (I was referred to as 'punky'), and there was literally no drama ever. I also kept a livejournal, and played Neopets, and chatted on AIM with strangers in cyberspace. Then I started college. My interest in the internet died, my site and forum died with it. I went out, got drunk, dyed my hair blue, went to school, got a job, quit school, made some noise.

Some time later, my mom got DSL and I lost myself in the internet again, frequenting a Harry Potter forum (as punkrockbigmouth), where I did assorted fan art and crack fanfiction and played Severus Snape in a Maurader's era RPG for years (those were some very creative times for me)... until the last book came out and I totally lost interest HP. We went back to dial up. These were dark times. For some time after that, I didn't mess around on the computer very much unless I was looking up videos of cats being hilarious.

Three or so years ago, my sister started paying for wireless cable internet, and I realized my neopets must be starving, so I logged in and thought, "I'd sure like a Lenny Conundrum trophy" but wasn't brainy enough to solve it myself. I found myself on the unwelcoming forums of Neocodex (I named myself punkrockbigmouth). The abrasiveness of the active members and compulsion to call BULLSHIT when they see it really appealed to me, especially since all my previous experience with other Neopet players were polite and fake. I've been here ever since.

You know, it is interesting that you point this out because that is one of my biggest dislikes about communicating on Neopets itself is the polite yet clearly fake messaging. Anything else gets you in trouble, silenced or iced, and nearly everyone is always, "NTY gls!" or "NTY glb!" It gets annoying fast.

The other thing I'd like to say is that it's interesting that you included what you went as on each of the sites.

On Halo Crusades I went as Yungthuggin89 (My gamertag for XBL) however everyone only ever called me Yung and so I dropped the rest of it to just being Yung. Shortly after joining here, using Jaxxen, I changed my name to Yung. I didn't feel myself using a different identity. I don't know if that would remain true on a different community but I know I felt very "out of my skin," per say.

This is my first neopets community, I was told about the site by a friend who used to be active here and came here to lurk and use the programs. Then got bored with actual neopets and wanted to become an actual member with getting to know people and chatting ,etc. . So here I am trying to find my way into neocodex society!

Buuut my life on the internets and forums are far and wide... I was a part chat forum (not really based on anything, was just general chat-ish stuff) for about 4-5 years before the site ended up dying and being reborn without forums. I met some really great people, still friends with a lot of them, met a few of them irl, did A LOT of things I'm not proud of, was a bully, was bullied, pretty much everything else you can think of. I used my real identity, pictures, info, etc. and from that experience I've learned that it was too easy to be stalked.

So now I go by an alias and dont care to share too much personal information about myself, what I look like, where I live (aside from I'm American and I'm a girl).

Umm before that when I was a silly teenager I was an avid fanfiction writer and belonged to a few communities where I would write stories and make friends and yea.

I've met some really cool people on neopets, mostly through my guild and have built great friendships with them off neopets, through facebook or msn, etc. But now I avoid chatting there at all costs unless it's in my guild.

This is my internet chat roots... I've since branched off onto other forums relating to pharmacology and audio... :p

    Funnily enough, me too :p

Well, I guess I did originally start out frequenting fanfiction.net to read HP fics, but I was very young. Barely older than dazzer when he joined :p

I moved on to a few other fan fic sites, and then I found neopets, and neopets cheating (GZP) and then codex. The site was private back then, closed registrations (like what.cd) and I remember Alex posting an advertisement on the GZP boards about neocodex opening registrations on Christmas Day. Best christmas present ever :p

Over the years I've also frequented a few other cheating sites, esp. back when I played neo on a regular basis. Neofreaks, 3vo, IcedAccounts and SlopDog to name a few. For some reason I don't think I was ever involved with digibliss. I think they were done or seriously fading by the time I joined codex.

Now I split my online time between codex, a few tracker forums, and wikipedia :p Not that I'm very involved in wikipedia, but I do spend an awefully large amount of time on their servers

I've also played a fair amount of online video games, most of which had communities in their own right. Right now I don't really play anything seriously, but I am looking forward to D3 here in a week or so.

I started off as a 12 year old going into the Yahoo classical music chat room, and hanging out with a set of weird adults. My favourite search engine was Ask Jeeves, basically because I loved P.G. Wodehouse. Around that time, I stumbled across Neopets, and took meticulous care of my pet. That was Hell, thanks to dialup, but I did it anyway. After a while, I got a trans potion, had no idea what it was, and used it on my pet. The result was so traumatizing, I couldn't bear looking at what used to be my pet, so I closed down my account, and didn't return to Neopets for years. During that time, I was frequenting online journals, making a few online friends (lost track of them a long time ago), and dealing with school. A few years ago, I came back to Neopets, but didn't have the time to play. Then I came across Codex's item database when I was trying to get that crappy packrat avatar, and that drew me in. When I joined, I was exposed to a whole new exciting world of Neopets, one that made it way more fun. I wandered around the forums for a while, observing, before shoving my oar in here and there.

Codex is the only social forum I've joined, I'm not a very social person, but I like it here ^_^

My first ever account made on the internet was on GameFAQs in 2003. I was on there looking through guides on... can't remember which game it was that led me to the discovery of that site (I think it was either Goldeneye or a Final Fantasy game). This is also about the time I started Neopets, but it was an on and off situation. Anyway I started frequenting the site's message boards, and it started from there.

Went to Gamerzplanet for the illegit life in various games, it worked out nicely for a few online MMOs
Discovered Neocodex through Gamerzplanet where I still recognise a few members from there.

All this while I was on GameFAQs, posting and lurking the hell out of the site's social and game boards. I'm now inactive at GzP so GFAQs and Codex are the only forums I use at the moment.

You know I find that hot. ;)

I personally started off being a wrestling fan. WWF as it was called back in my day! (I know, sad) When I was 14/15 ish I joined a forum dedicated to WWF roleplay and, with the distinct lack of female fans to roleplay as "diva's", soon found myself engaged and writing up lengthy roleplays with the other members daily. This lasted for about 2 years! I enjoyed the community, and made a few nice friends, but looking back, I have a sneaky suspicion that half of the other members were perverts but I suppose that's the same everywhere on the internets.

After that I went to college, got a life etc and internet usage went down significantly!

I got into alot of MMO games, WoW etc.But then my sister joined neopets again because she loved the hassee bounce game and It brought me memories back from my youth! So after making 10mill legit, but it taking about 6 months, I looked around for an easier way....

    And I found codex!

Initially I joined, thought it was a hack site and the programmes were going to steal all my nps and didn't really take much notice until I started talking to some of the older member here, and realised it wasn't just a cheat site, and I just found myself enjoying the community and the different personalities on the forum. Now, I don't even play neopets, but I stick around for the people :)

    Anyhow..
    My story... Errrr..

I started playing Jazz Jack rabbit when I was 3, THIS my friends, is what we call a gateway game, it lead to me playing Doom when I was 5ish, which is most definitely another gateway game, this quickly lead to competitive gaming, such as streetfighter, Unreal tournament, quake, this sparked an extremely competitive nature in me, etc.

I'm going to stop typing because I just realised no one cares.

Tl;dr I've played neopets for 10 years, cheated for 9, It's usually my "on the side" game, for relaxation.

My online life started about 14 years ago in chat rooms and on ICQ talking to older men and roleplaying with random people. I started playing MUDs a couple of years later, around the same time I began playing D&D and other tabletop RPG's, and roleplayed a bunch more. I soon got on staff for a couple of MUDs and worked on building areas and developing/running contests and content. After a couple years of that, I found Neopets and was a legit player for over a decade (with a few hiatuses sprinkled here and there). I used the internet to research a lot of the freaky shit that piqued my interest and joined some fun sites for user perks and depth of content (I guess BMEZine is probably the only one that I wouldn't mind letting people know about publicly). Started playing MMORPG's like Shadowbane, Ryl, WoW, and DDO and some others. The only one I still play on a regular basis is DDO. Played A3 for a while during college, but I think that game died several years ago. At some point in this time I started a Livejournal, then migrated to Myspace, then migrated to Facebook. The frequency and extent in which I used these as blogging mediums decreased with each migration.

I started playing Neo again most recently when I went back to college full time. I have always been neutral toward cheating, so I joined Codex so I could stalk my husband and use the item DB - without the intent to post, but I read dozens and dozens of topics to learn as much as I could. After a few weeks I started wanting to become an active part of the community and when I saw the opportunity to post in a discussion about the crazy math-related Lenny Conundrum at that time, I jumped in.

Forenote: sorry if my tenses are messed up, I'm just really tired. It's safe to assume anything in the main 'body' of the post is in the past tense.

My roots began in Neopets, circa late 2002. Because my brother was (and still is really) my role model, I had to emulate almost everything he did. And, like almost every other teenager back then, he played Neopets. I played the game purely as a child would - not trying for anything but to have fun and play with the pretty toys/games, with a view to become rich, like my brother. After losing several of my accounts to the back end of my memory, I gave up for a little while, then returned to play further. I probably did this for about 4/5 years, before abandoning until my early teenage years. I believe I was drawn back to it after developing a fixation with Pokemon, then suffering deprivation from that due to the next release being several months away, so I reverted to Neopets. (By now, I'm about 13?) After several months of trying to get rich, I thought to myself: "there must be an easier way." As I deduced from a Google search or two (with a little accidental help from the Neoboards) it turned out there was. And, thanks to SL's prime forum advertisements from back in the day, I am now here, typing out this paragraph, regaling my tale.

I have to say, despite all the freezings I've had that wouldn't have happened had I not got into botting Neopets, I owe so much to Codex, and it's community - especially those like Sweeney/prbm/Bone, who developed my hard skin, natural intellect and debating skills into what they are today.

    Done. :)

    Eheheh, why?~ :p ♥
It feels a little bit awkward to say this, but I really have changed in a lot of different ways after discovering it four years ago! Mostly being more tolerant about things and realising how to deal with situations which aren't exactly the best, and realising what I did wrong in the past and why/how that caused life things to turn out. Sure, normally you learn about this when you're in school, but... overall my school experiences were pretty crap and I don't think anything good came out of it for most of the time I was in it! Hehehe, I remember the first time I went on 4chan~ It was just so much different to what I was used to, and that was really refreshing! Plus, there was just something about that place which seemed kind of appealing to me (that was probably just the funny cat images and image macros and all, what kind of 13 year old wouldn't find those amusing? x3 )

There are lots of trolls and dumb posters there, and it gets worse with each year that goes by, but I've discovered so much from going on 4chan and have so many silly and cool memories of it! I've made a load of close friends thanks to it as well, and met a lot of awesome people from meetups organised on various boards too. None of them were the stereotypical "creepy 30 year old pedophile neckbeard landwhale who gets off to children and spouts memes constantly"! To be honest though a couple of them like lolis and all that, but pffftt whatever, ultimately they're just drawings ♥
A couple of my friends had this happen to them too! Which is kinda relieving, to be honest~ It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has had lots of positive and fun experiences on that site :3

I know that most people see that site in a negative ways and would troll/make fun of people who even think that's it's decent, but eh, it's not that much fun or very accurate to judge someone solely based on the sites they go to~ ^^
