How unknown do they have to be to qualify?

I've never liked modern pop, and the mainstream stuff today(not being a hipster nutjob, just don't like it) but then again I've never been into especially obscure acts either.

So, that beign said,

The Frattelis

The Jam

Bad Religion

The Recaunteurs

PJ Harvey

RATM

Monoloque

Motion City Sountrack

Yess! <3 (I'm so tired, I had to edit to respond to this quote. I almost forgot to do so)

Waser has posted about half the stuff I would have so I'm having to mooch through my iPod looking for slightly less obvious things. Hrmph. Effort.

Beirut - Okay, pretty well known. But Postcards from Italy is one of my favourite songs. Plus there aren't enough bands with accordions and flugelhorns.

The Tallest Man on Earth - Amusingly not very tall, basically Swedish Bob Dylan (hyperbole but that sort of vein)

This has ended up being a great deal folkier than perhaps is a true reflection of my taste but oh well. :p

These two! especially Tallest man, omg I love him so much.

These are artists that I'm a fan of and also consider lesser known.

Ratatat

LOVE ratatat. its so relaxing to me.

City and Color

Oh, City and Colour <3 I missed him the last time he was on tour D:

I don't know how I missed this topic before now, but anywho

Some of my favorites are:

mewithoutYou

Anathallo

Maps & Atlases

Mates of State

Rational Animals

Vice (NY hxc)

Back and forth (jersey hxc)

Wester

Hindsights

The Scene Aesthetic

Bare the Traveler

Thats all I can think of atm. Its late. -_-

Ohhh I really like Fever Ray! I've been wanting to see her live for years. Got into(-ish) the Knives because of her, but I definitely like her style as Fever Ray versus the style the band produces.

I also have been listening to this song (featuring her) a lot recently:

Fever Ray is unlike any other band I have ever listened to. Their music has such depth and originality. If you ever get the chance, listen to them whilst on shrooms or lsd. It is amazing.

It is one of my dreams to see them live. After stalking their live performances on youtube I was definitely not disappointed.

Did you find Royksopp through Fever Ray? Youtube led me to Royksopp that way :)

The Strange Familiar: made it to the top 48 on America's Got Talent a few years ago. They've gotten some of their songs on CW and ABC Family shows (and were even in the rotation on the sound system at Kohl's when I left four years ago), but haven't really reached any notoriety here.

I Just Want to Love You

Being Me

Spoiler

(And, okay...I adore them so much that I dedicated my poetry anthology to their lead singer Kira and got a shoutout on their weekly webshow. *giggle*)

Tartanic: does the rounds at Renaissance festivals here in America. If there's a such thing as "Scottish rock" (with only giant bass drums and bagpipes), Tartanic is it. They get going and you can hear the drums all the way across the festival. They're fantastic!

Briefcase No. 1 is my absolute favorite and makes me want to dance. :D

Spoiler

Oh and they're not really "lesser known", but I do love Foster the People. ;)

And Christian Kane...though he's more known for his acting and I don't really like Country. Freakin hottie, though. :D

I actually had already been listening to a little of Royksopp (I want to say through Pandora... but my brother also always introduces me to music so I'm not particularly sure--he was the one that got me into Fever Ray a long time ago). When I heard that particular song I was like "I recognize that voice!" but was surprised to see it was by them. Had to check their Wikipedia page to verify that she was doing the vocals. :p

They do a song with Royksopp :) Go check it out.

My taste is a bit all over the place, but a few off the top of my head: syrup16g, Boy in Static, New Buffalo, The Delgados, Jawbreaker (they're not really that lesser-known, are they?), Agalloch, Goatsnake, Autodefiance, Crooked Fingers, Blackbird Raum... Actually, I'm going to cut myself off here, because a lot of my tastes are genre-known but otherwise obscure and I'm a little out-of-touch in my age.

antihoney, who was a Japanese musician, her work was made around 2003~2005 but she's disappeared since about 2007/2009ish. All her work is very... delicate, I guess? antihoney.com/music.html is her website and  is a good sample of her music, same with https://www.youtube....h?v=fFPaY_AQrAw I love her, and I wish I could get in touch with her to see if she was doing okay.

Nicolas Jaar is great. I almost saw Darkside this spring, but ended up having a scheduling conflict.

I guess this guy might count, I'm not sure if he does however:
Brentalfloss

He puts lyrics to video game music. So he's not one of those artists, who makes pop tunes or other such music that doesn't get recognized.

He's done music for things like Mario Paint, Zelda, (regular) Mario, Ducktales and other games. Then again, it's not always games. He has one for the Wii Mii Channel, and a parody of Bohemian Rhapsody.

He used to have his own webcomic before it sadly ended. I can't remember how I found him.
