June 3rd is open registration for Flight Rising and a lot more Codexians will play the game as well.

I'm speaking for myself when I say I made the stupidest mistakes when I first played the game like:

  • Exalting a dragon thinking it was a way to mature a dragon from Hatchling to Adult
  • Spent an uncontrollable amount of Treasure (FR non-premium) currency on Dragons of little or no resell/sentimental value
  • Auctioned off a lightning dragon egg I found in Gather Items for less than 10K treasure since I thought young dragons are cheap and thus my egg should be cheap too
  • I bought most of my things from the Marketplace thinking it'll be a bargain compared to user-sold items in the Auction House. WRONG. FR isn't restock-driven like Neopets.
  • More stupid things I'm too embarrassed to admit.

So here's where we come to play. Let's use this time before registration to compile advice/key information that will benefit the new players. For Example:

  • The eye color of all your offspring will always be the color of your flight's (elemental) rune. It is completely independent of the color of eyes of the parents. If you do want to change flights later on, you have one free change but a 6 month cool down. After that, you will be charged 1500 gems (~$15, Gems is like NeoCash except it can circulate through the economy.)
  • People in the game are willing to trade gems for treasure. The rate is fluctuates around 450 Treasure per 1 gem.
  • Having a lot of Gems does not imbalance the game on the competitive level. Gems are mostly used for designing dragons than battle strategies

What are some advice/tips can be given to the new players?

Don't waste time and money trying to buy flight specific spells in the marketplace. I wasted quite a bit of time waiting for Arcane spells just to find out how useless they are. :crybaby:

    Don't buy Berserker Stones.
Train up strength-based fighters with Scratch for PvE Coliseum play.
Don't start Coli training with fewer than three dragons.

Are there any dragons you suggest for a beginner's first?  Any anything you suggest for the first day?

I chose a mirror dragon as my starter, don't pick mirrors cause they look like ass and nobody wants them. First day just familiarize yourself with the site because there isn't much you'll be able to do anyways.

-Make sure you bond with your familiars daily (these are like petpets).

-When it comes to gathering i usually put a couple turns into food for my dragons then pump the rest into scavenging for those lucky dragon eggs :p. I've only had 3 since i started tho.

-You don't have to breed the same type of dragons unless you specifically want a certain type of dragon. I'm currently breeding a snapper with a spiral, but i'm ok with this because the genes make the possible babies all look awesome regardless of the outcome of the types of dragons they'll be (snapper or spiral).

-Be careful when buying dragons to breed, you can't make inbred babies unfortunately.

-Make sure you grab an item from Pinkerton's Plundered Pile daily, i'll occasionally get an ambush from it which is a nice 45k profit. Free money woo.

I chose not to disclose them because... yes.

Are there any dragons you suggest for a beginner's first?  Any anything you suggest for the first day?

Choosing dragons in general is more of a preference case than a practical one. In the Coliseum, different species do have slight differences in stats and abilities, but as you level them up and have ability stones, those defaults can easily be manipulated to the stats and abilities you want. The initial stats are even negligible as you reach max level. When you sign up, you are to chose one of four dragon species to be your progeny or first generation dragons. In the long run, these dragons don't matter to your gameplay unless you choose them to be in terms of battling and design. OF course there are Coatls that are high in demand, but they're too expensive and impractical to consider at an early level.

The only real suggestion to give you is to choose your flight seriously, taking eye colors into consideration. If you plan to breed a certain color of dragon to reach your dream dragon, eye colors can even make or break your entire effort if you're very OCD. Also in picking your flights, I found that smaller flights tend to have nicer communities, but there are always exceptions. Check this page for populations:

    http://flightrising....n.php?p=explore

Finally in choosing your flight pick an element (flight) you can identify with. Although flights elementals are a loose indication of the personalities of people there, if by the chance the people are horrible (which is pretty low), at least you picked a flight that you liked than just because someone else said so.

In my opinion don't breed your two starter dragons right off the bat. Since you get a free opposite sex dragon after you create your starter.

You're better off finding dragons to breed from the Auction House, although always check to see if they are related through Scrying Workshop.

Mirrors are awesome, I don't know what you're talking about. :p

    • Triple-gened dragons are almost always more valuable in terms of both resell value and future breeding potential
    • If you post around a bit in the forum for the Flight you pick, there are probably at least a few raffles/contests you can join to get a head start.
    • Coatls/Wildclaws have prohibitively long breeding cooldowns. Until you have more nests/lair space, you're better off breeding some of the more common dragons

Yeah, I actually kind of like the mirrors. I just have the one (starter) atm, and he is all grey/black/boring. But I don't think he is ugly.

I'm glad I read through this though, very helpful. I haven't made many mistakes, but as far as gathering items, I seem to be wasting all my gathering on food. I didn't realize there were dragon eggs that you could get! xD oops

I never posted direct pics because direct links don't work. But there are many color/gene/species combinations, so if you can determine the colors, you can do a search and narrow it down to a bunch of people. Take a second dragon and you have your user. Or I uploaded a pic where the filename had the dragonId in it... not sure.

I posted mine..... directly. -_- but I'm still here *luckily*. I see that board has been deleted though (or possibly moved to the private/secret forum).

Hopefully it will be safe to do so in the new forum

I think it would still be a good idea to upload pics to a different site (like tinypic) first. Also, seeing as they might be trolling our forums for people, give as little info as possible on any of the public forums (same as what you'd do with your neopets acct)

Or like that latest mass banning that appeared to have only hit Codexians.

That wasn't a cool happening at all, and I know I shared a ton of dragons on here too (though not direct image links); I didn't get banned, but seeing how many others did just makes me sick.  :/
