Erotic cheesemonger.

Is this what you do now, or is it the dream?

I can't imagine you as a postman... Seems you have talents that exceed that of your typical postman.

Didn't know if you'd set it up as a side career. When you move to London....

I can confirm. Postman.

I've already managed to perfect my recipe for bull's milk cheese which I think will probably go down quite well in that London.

That sounds awful and gross. And something people with weird fetishes might like. Which is also gross.

Idk.. computer science or something. In the USA most people would make more money in computer science than delivering mail. It isn't like he lacks the talent.

Currently I'm a Recruiter; specifically for individuals in the Pharmaceutical / Medical Device realm, in the Boston area. It's easy enough, you get what you put into it (100% commission based). Not my ideal position, since it's purely commission and that will come into play when I apply for a house mortgage, as my pay can vary widely. It also conflicts with my personality, as I feel pressure to be "on" and charismatic, sociable. It's a rare day that I feel that way naturally, and although I can fake it, it's a force. Since my success is correlated with the number of outgoing calls I make, it can be a struggle. Positives include interacting with intelligent people, which I greatly appreciate after a few years of managing restaurants. Too many interactions with pissed customers, either because we didn't have public restrooms, they had to wait too long for their food (consistently short staffed due to labor budget set by owner), or getting yelled at because the advertised price of a food item for $5.00 didn't include tax ($5.13).

The issue I'm running into, is that I don't think there is literally anything that I enjoy, that I could get paid well enough to do. I've put a lot of thought into the subject, as of late. It's rather depressing to think about it; "even if money weren't a motivating factor, what would I want to do?" - the only answer I can think of, is play video games, and in general, to learn. Even then, I'd have to be the best of the best to make a living as a gamer, and then it sometimes comes down to luck. I was damn good at CS1.6 back in the day, but I'm sure I've lost much of my skill. Even then, I'd only say I was in the top 500 players, not nearly close enough to the top three I'd need to be in to make any consistent money at it. Then there is the fact that I don't enjoy many of the FPS games currently on the market, that everyone else loves (hence the paying tournaments). Woe is me, is what it is, etc.

I do have goals though. 725,000 goals. I figure I can be happy with a 200k house (good luck finding anything in decent shape, within commuting distance in MA for less - I already drive an hour and a half both ways)

25k to pay off student debt. 500k invested in reliable, dividend paying stocks. Supporting two adults (myself and my wife), costs approximately 18k a year for our modest but comfortable-ish lifestyle (rent/food/utilities). Currently, and historically, reliable (google "dividend aristocrats") stocks give off 2-4% of invested funds per year (adjusted for inflation), which with 500k invested works out to 10-20k a year, all without withdrawing on the principle. Some years they pay a little more, some years, a little less. A weekend gig is enough to cover the difference. If you're interested in investing, MrMoneyMustache has a blog post that goes over the 4% rule quite well.

I've thought about blogging, and monetizing it. I've done some research, but if anyone here has first hand experience, I'd love to hear from you and learn from your experiences.

I am not currently working.  Just quit a couple weeks ago.  Much needed break, not sure how long it's going to last or if I'll ever go back to my career, which was...

I'm an optician I sell contacts and eyeglasses!  We dont have a dr at the sight I work for so I have a lot of downtime to play games!

I had been working in the eye care field for over 10 years.  You're the first person I've met on here that works in the same field.  I really don't know what to do with this information.

I was a director when I left work, which means I ran companies related to eye care.  I've done and mastered almost everyhing there is to do in an eye doctor's office.  I'm sure I'll have to step down a couple rungs on the ladder when I go back to work, but I should be able to get a management or director position without much trouble even if I wait a year or two.  I've worked really hard over my career to make sure that I am the absolute best at what I do and it has paid off.  Which is nice, because now I have the flexibility (and savings) to take the time I need to focus on my health.

It's the dream obviously, you already know I'm a postman. O_o I hope to one day own the greatest erotic cheese emporium the world has ever known stocking everything from Norwegian Jarlsberg to Venezuelan Beaver Cheese.

Heh.

Edit: I'm a postgrad student.

I like crime (from a sociological perspective), media, social change, media/journalism policy, etc. I like to learn. I like research. So I have no idea what I'm going to do.

I also want to open a business one day but yeah, probably not going to happen because I'll be broke and homeless.

Right now I'm a student and I technically have two jobs.

I'd love to do human rights work and just generally help others live a better life.

It's been my plan for almost 15 years to be a human rights lawyer but as of late I'm questioning it a lot and realizing it might not be the best fit for me after all. Kind of throwing me for a major loop.

You can probably all guess what I do for a living, seeing as I bang on about it so much. I've included a short video which 100% emphasises what "The Job" is and what we do. I equally love and hate my job with all my soul, some of the things I've seen and done.

I kid you not, I've been at the scenes of stabbings and saved lives, I've been on the frontline of riots, arrested rapists/peadophiles/murderers etc, and made some of the best friends a person could hope. I used to sit up late at night, too excited for sleep and begging to get back to work. Unfortunately a lot changes in six years.

So what do you want to do for a living? What do you do at the moment? Why aren't you in your dream job?

wow that sounds both exciting and horrific.

when i studied to become a personal trainer, i had a cop in my class and she never described her job to be near as adventurous as yours

as for me, at the moment im working part time at sydney airport in tax and duty free store, also im studying traditional chinese medicine so my dream job would be to specialise in womens health and fertility and also combine my personal training certificate to further educate and help women :)

Right now I answer phones in a place where every caller is either OD'd on paxil or not taking nearly enough. I love it, for the most part. I'd love to be a health coach and go back to homeschooling and doing all my other weird hippie things I don't have time for now.

I'm working as an emergency dispatcher. Answering 911 calls, business lines, sending police on calls, dispatching firemen, etc.
