I finally evolved pidgeot to into pidgeot. CP of around 450! Considering pidgeys are everywhere, I'm going to try and get a few more pidgeots to battle with and throw into gyms while I'm waiting to evolve my other Pokemon
In my experience with the beta it's actually wiser to not dump all of your candy and stardust into training a Pokemon.
Most likely you'll be able to catch the evolved version down the line and most likely it'll have a better movepool as well AND you'll have a shitton of stardust and candy necessary to keep it in the big leagues. Rather than dumping the stardust and candies into several of the same pokemon just for them to be outleveled by a new catch of the same evolution because you as a player became higher leveled.
If anything you can stick to evolving since it gives you decent Exp, I believe, and doesn't cost Stardust. Obviously evolve the things you have the most access to which is likely Pidgey, Rattata, Weedle/Caterpie. Weedle/Caterpie may not be as common as Pidgey/Rattata but you need half the amount of candy to evolve them so if you see enough of them it can even itself out.
Oh and also try to keep a variety of pokemon types both for your gym take down team as well as defending gym pokemon. Shitton of people out here are just putting whatever they find is strongest and here in AZ they're most likely Fire, Ground, Rock types with Pidgeottos and Raticates since they're so easy to obtain and there are multiples of these in one gym location. Anyone with Water pokemon or pokemon that learn Water type moves will easily storm through that gym as well as majority of the gyms with a similar set up. Think of putting in a different type than what is already established there to not make it so easy for enemy factions to take over your gym(s).

There's one thing I don't understand - In order to have the strongest pokemon possible do you have to raise their CP as high as possible BEFORE evolving them? Or does it not matter?

Does not matter I think, since they are use the same candy. Pidgey candy is used to pidgeot etc

Shinies also exist? If so, this will take a while. I want my Shiny Gyarados.
While I am still waiting for the game in Asia, since you cannot change team, would it be better to:
Join Team Blue that has more people and thus more gyms in control, more chance to train pokemon and earn gold
OR
Join team Yellow with a smaller fanbase just because you like it better?

I made the mistake of joining yellow. You should prob join blue because you get bonuses for every Pokemon you have in a gym
Thanks for the advice. I guess I will follow the majority.

Pretty sure i read it on my facebook feed somewhere, I'm not going to risk it though because of my lack of patience. In other news, a pidgeot has taken other the White House and a dude was spotted riding their bike back and forth in the streets trying to hatch an egg. What a time to be alive.

Hey everyone! So, I wanted to start a thread for anyone who may have any questions on how to play Pokémon Go! I know I did and still do as I play it.
I also welcome people to share what they caught or what they wish to catch. Like for me, I want a Butterfree. I caught an Abra today! Just as cool!
Feel free to share pictures.
Plus, if you use it for exercise, as it promotes exercise, feel free to share those stories as well. We can support each other with this game here.
So.... let's begin!
_______________________________________________________________________
Today was my first day playing and these are the catches of the day... minus the repeats that I traded for candy.... and I caught another Pinsir after this pic was taken and it's CP is 330! So, I traded the one you see here for candy!
Tomorrow I will go on a walk to incubate my first egg!

I download it and made the character but it just stopped at that point; could look around at the character but it never went to the map screen.
So I uninstalled it. Guess I'll just wait.. ![]()
Does it only work on phones though?

That problem usually happens when servers are being wonky.I download it and made the character but it just stopped at that point; could look around at the character but it never went to the map screen.

You can use a server check before playing
From the FAQ, I think tablets and other devices should be able to support if there is GPS. Bluestack do not work since there is no GPS.

Is there merit to Powering up your pokemon to max before evolving?

And the team I chose is:
I think so: from my experience if you level up your pidgey for instance to the max and then evolve it, the Pidgeotto had a higher CP than if you would have not leveled up your pidgey.
Now, I need to see if it is cheaper to level up a pidgey (stardust wise) compared to pidgeotto... because if so, then that also makes a difference.
God damn it, I threw away an incense.... now I am out of them! I had 4 of them today!

There's no point in risking getting banned for me, because the map is empty anyway :v I thought I wouldn't want to play this, but man, I'm so jealous.

What do you mean, getting banned? And why can't you play this?
