The SAT and ACT are college entrance examinations - your university. You can take either one no matter where you are now, but it used to be that the coasts would more often take the SAT, and the midwest takes the ACT. They're both given by different companies so they're really different. The SAT is out of 1600, and the ACT is out of 36. The SAT used to only have a Verbal and Math section, but they expanded it to include writing, and the ACT tests you on Writing, Reading, Math, and Logical Reasoning (science applications).
My sophomore year I took the Pre-ACT, which is out of 32 since hard questions are taken off. I got a 29 which is alright. I also took an SAT on my own and got a 1350, which really isn't that great, but it's acceptable for a sophomore.
Only a few months ago my school administered the Pre-SAT.

I took one in 6th grade, because I was chosen to; and I got 1126 -.-. It was a real SAT test, but it obviously didn't count. I won an award at the John Hopkins award thingy o.O.Ah, Ki'm, a lovely question.
Every state has varying achievement tests - in Illinois you take the IGAP at different ti'mes when you're young. I don't remember it much.
