Well, most people these days can't be bothered to do the homework for many reasons. Mostly being because they don't feel like doing it.

Why you may ask? Well, let me tell you why.

You go to school to learn right? Obviously. You go to school to learn and do work, not: go to school, learn, do work, go home and do even more work. What's the point of homework? to waste our time? Parents these days can't even help their children with their homework in subjects like math, because they never learned it. The system has completely changed, and if the teacher explains how to do something horribly, you can't go home and suddenly learn how to do it without asking for further explanations.

I for one don't like homework because I don't even need to go to school. At the beginning of the year when we get our course outlines, which lists everything we're going to learn in that class, I memorize everything in every topic within the first week for every subject.

So here I am, sitting in school for 6-7 hours a day getting lectured on how to do things I already know better than my teachers. What do I get for being smart? "Here Daniel, I want you to try this university-level math test" or "Why don't you ever do your work" 'because it's not worthy of being done by me'" or sometimes my favourite excuse "Why don't you ever listen?" 'Why don't you try becoming smarter before trying to teach me the wrong way to do it?'"

Also, for a normal job as an adult, say you're a detective. You don't get payed to take the work home and work on it, you get payed to work during the hours you're supposed to work. Taking it home to do it is completely optional, which is working extra hours. Your boss doesn't say "Here, let me pay you an extra $50 because you decided to work an extra 3 hours when I didn't ask you to." Bottom line, you don't get payed for it.

So why should we have to do work outside of school? Our school work is probably work our parents could barely even manage to do. Alls I know, my parents, my grand parents, and all my family in the past have never had a job which they've had to take work home and work on it to get it done. I've had scientists, programmers, mechanics, and none of them had to come home with work.

Homework is a waste of time. I can understand doing maybe 10 or 11 math questions to get used to something new, but 50 questions doing the same thing over and over? I'd rather go eat a pooed-on termite-infested rats nest diaper than do 50 question like "13 + x = 24, x = ?"

Should homework be assigned in school?

lol, I would always get homework, and I would always do it.

but in university, homework is rare, except in the forms of large assignments/essays/papers.

No, It shouldn't. For the reason you stated. School is to learn and do work. You shouldn't have to give up 2/3's pf your life to school and then 1/2 of that last 3rd to homework. I'm in 7th grade and daily I get 2+ Hours worth of homework... How lame is that? Thats the reason I am failing some subjects... i mean I totaly ACE The test but homework... I just can't do it's just not even woprth it. I say we do whatt he mexicans are doing. A US wide Boycott of doing homework. That would shove it up there god damn asses trying to give my life away to school and homework. (I've even had to miss baseball games I PLAY in just top get some homework done so I can get a Passing grade.)

And sure, You can call us lazy... But really, Be honest should you spend 6-8 hours a day at school THEN 2-4+ hours of homework and 1 Hour to do something then go to sleep just to get the sleep reconmended. I mean I usualy get 6 FUCKING HOURS of sleep each day cuase of homework ( minus the weekends)

I just am really fed up with homework. Hell I would go year around with school if there was no homework. cuase basically school is cool just not homework. Basicaly those 2-4 hours of free time add up and go passed a summer vacations time... And most kids in the summer forget half tyhe things they learn...

And I quote barcode: "id rather fuck a catapiller then to do homework"

I'll sometimes do my homework if I think it's worth doing or it doesnt look all childish. For example, for my French ISU (yes, im a freshman) we have to come up with 3 places we want to travel back in time, who we want to meet for what reason. Before that we did a monster unit, and they expect me to know about some huge gorilla that lives on an island or a giant lizard that attacks a city? I don't even waste my time on stuff like that.
The thing I hate the most is getting stickers on a "well done" assignment I hand in. I don't want to see the teacher sabotage my page of work with some giant, sparkly smiley face, I just want to see my mark on the assignment.
And I just thought of this now. Classes are usually 30 people minimum, and what kind of 30-some student filled classroom is going to behave themselves through a 72 minute period? There are too many students in classes, I had to wait almost a week just to get the teacher to look over my essay on a book, and guess what? She looked over it the day before it was due. What am I supposed to say? "Thank you for correcting this at the last minute. Thanks for letting me go home and rush through it and make corrections and waste my entire afternoon fixing this" I dont think so.

I'm pro homework, but not what your generation is getting these days. Theres so many fucking high standards that should be lowered. Homework is meant to just be practicing work a little bit for memory, not doing 5 fuckin projects making some poster on something that a worksheet could cover.

I completely agree. I don't care if the school day is extended a bit to cover more material, but doing all of these fucking projects is miserable. Last week I got a total of around 6-8 hours of sleep because I had around 10 insanely stupid projects. "Write a movie script about a family living during the Industrial Revolution and then film it. Remember that the only person allowed on camera is yourself and it must be at least 15 minutes long"..."Make a crossword puzzle in Spanish using the names of items found in airports"..."Create a list of songs that would be a good sound track for World War I". <----It's all complete bull. Now if you'll all excuse me, I have to go do some homework.

My math/biology/chemistry teachers are asses when it comes to homework :p . They assign about 20-30 minutes of homework each most days and then check to see if you did it the next day. If you didn't you lose 5 marks (which really adds up in both math and chemistry).

Not entirely useless though. Many jobs require people taking home work to complete. However any regular homework should be ased on theories you know and just questions. Projects should also be based on what you know, not how creative you can get (although I have no problem with getting creative). xD

I always used to force myself to my homework after dinner at home, but, for personal resons and the main resons I do it in the morning, like now. :p

I mean, after being at school/awake since seven thirty AM every morning of the week untill 4:14PM (school ends at three, takes some time to get home), I'm just too tired of work etc. to do more. -Which is sorta like why I dont feel like it .. they've passed the freakin line of homework into insanity. I have three sheets due today, and both oh so long, give or take it was the weekend, but Im having so many tests, it's silliness now .. lol ..

So in other words; no. ^_^

In theory homework should be a good thing, becuz it just refreshes ur memory of what you already learnt so you are prepared to move onto something else...but the thing is...you get so much homework and its repetition mostly if it was maybe 10 questions mixing the levels of it then its all good but its like 2 pages full of it!!

I dont even do h/w no more i just take the punishment.

Other then that, detectives are responsible to find out something, so they work at home also...

They dont give problems that you dont know how to do for homework... and it helps you better know the topic...

Homework will not kill you, although it may seem that way now lol
We didn't have computers and the internet when I was in high school so we had to do research the old fashioned way by going to the Library (OH THE SHOCK!!) I do agree that in some cases the amount of homework that is given is outrageously retarded and some teachers need to take their issues out on their shrinks and not their students...but overall homework is a good thing.

And some people DO get paid to take their work home with them. Not all jobs are 9-5.

Meh.. we all hate it, but it's necessary. Prepares us for the future.

But what's retarted.. is when homework takes up your whole f-ing life. I feel so pressured with work lately. In my school.. you come home at 5:20. If you have sports.. you'll come back at around 8:00+. Later for a game. There's usually 1-2 hours of homework minimum. And nowadays competition to getting into college is so rough.. that getting good grades and playing spots isn't even enough. You gotta play your instruments, get your community services hours in, blah blah blah blah blah.

When the fuck do we get time to just.. be kids.

Homework. It is retarted. The reason we go to school is to learn. We arent supposed to learn at home. We do work at school all day and then we have to go home to what? Homework. I think we would do well without it!

I think this also stems off of the obesity issue in the U.S. Why take our 'fun' or 'play' time away from us to do work. This makes it harder to get the exercise that the body needs. <_< Anyways, I just think homework is gay!

I have two AP classes (used to have three) and all of the rest of the classes I am assigned work in a lot of nights. Really guys... it's NOT that bad. I hardly do it at home at all but in other classes. I mean... it's just not that hard. The only class I knew I had to do homework in and that class is the very reason of which I support homework is my AP Calc BC class. In order to memorize the formulas that you are using you need to understand how to apply them on problems and that is what the homework was for. As the russian saying is "Repetition is the mother of learning." One needs to work by doing. In fact did you guys know that through a lecture you only retain 5% of what was said? And then through learning by doing you retain about 50% of what has been said. It's quite a big difference. The reason why teachers give you homework is for one because they don't have enough time to cover what you need to learn AND let you do activities with it in one small class period. And let's be honest guys... they could extend the amount of time you go to school but can a lot of you honestly say you want that? I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

Homework is painful while you're doing it. Trust me... I know. I have to write one 2000 word essay on a history topic per quarter for one class and another paper at least 1000 words for another class and then a bunch of lab write ups for AP Biology. As well as random little assignments that my other classes assign or art projects that need to be done. I understand that homework is hard but it's well worth it because you learn how to do it. I know that probably several of you could do perfectly well without homework. For most subjects I am one of them... HOWEVER... think of the other people in your class who need that extra time and practice to understand. THAT, my friends is what homework is for. Yeah, it's not fair to those who can learn easily but it is nessesary. And besides... once you get to college all of you smart ones that don't need it are in luck... you won't get nearly as much ;)

It all depends on the level of the kid and the kid's intelligence and learning style. It really does.

I think schools should filter kids out by learning style - not for segregation or determining who gets a better education - not IQ filtering, but style filtering... cause I remember in 6th grade having an entire class dedicated to honoing study habits and they'd test you on your style and say "oh, you're a visual thinker. Go do visual stuff to learn." (Mind, these were ALL pointless for me because I always got about even scores, bastards) but they'd never help you specifically to do it... I mean, you're in sixth grade.

The point of homework and all projects and all is to cater to kids of a different learning style, for example, making a movie for physical and visual learners, and for kids with different interests, like having musically inclined kids consider a soundtrack for WWI in order to think critically about the emotions of that period. These projects aren't pointless - I think almost everything you guys have brought up sound hella interesting and I WISH my teachers were so lax. (Tet, not you, essays suck balls)

It just seems like busy work either because you're lazy (85% of the reason probably) or because it's pointless for you, you eitehr would learn a different way or you just got it in the first place.

I think more emphasis needs to be placed on teaching kids HOW to learn and understand concepts, instead of hammering down their throats WHAT they should learn. Like if we emphasized conversational foreign languages and algebraic/logical thinking early on in education. That just makes it easier to learn English/literature and think through any problem, honestly.

at any rate, I'm offtopic

Homework is necessary for some kids. I would love for it to be optional, because in my case and the cases of many others, homework is not necessary [at all/in such large doses of busy work]. However, when it comes to writing essays and critical thinking, most of the time people just don't want to do it because they're lazy and they don't care about learning. Solutions to this would be either to teach more critical skills or make it more interesting and disembowling busywork alltogether and promoting thought processes.

I love learning. I'm going to a liberal arts college next year. ^____^
