We all have very important infomation on your computers/laptops it needs to be backed up seriously! Now my mum only creates word docs and so forth shes a teacher so there is countless reports and crap like that, but my dad is a consultant and makes ridiculously huge powerpoint presentations im talking like 30-100mb sometimes - cos they include videos/sounds and stuff like that. Im kinda in the bad books atm for gettin nicked heh stupid me I no. Now I need some ideas on what I need to create a server type thing, what should I do in this situation, Im probably thinking about a 200gb hd. The server wont be under much strain cos well it will porbably only used every evening at about 10. I also need some help on what sort of software im going to need. All the ideas you can offer would be great

Network the whole house - Plug in, network found, able to connect to the server.
I'd advise if you're capable with networking in linux, you should use centOS, but if not, use M$ server 2003 - not too hard to use/manage networks with
(<3 my server... 768mb of dell server RAM, etc... runs like a beauty)

Yes - I made myself out to be a complete idiot. Why would I use CentOS when there is Redhat
Its kinda not what I was after I no all that sorta stuff, im just after the software like to make my windows comp updated every evening at 10 so all the files in a particular folder are copied and sent to my server guess ill just knock up a program to do it

honestly i cant help you there but i suggest you get one bigger than 200gb might cost more but it will be worth it, my uncle does this server stuff.

Erm no need its just for my home not a proper server its just a fileserver for my house. a backup server.
