I would say it's okay for mature people (although sadly alot of people that are 18 or older don't come anywhere near to being mature), but I think it's wrong for parents to go buy their 10 year old son GTA. Sure there is violence everywhere, but why let the kid experience it in the safety of his home?

Yeah, there are some who are over 18 who are not mature. Want to know what makes me mad? Hearing kids who havent gone through puberty on Socom (You can pick them out like sore thumbs). People say horrible things on Socom, and there is a lot of killing involved, well, thats all you do dry.gif.

I dont see how violence in game could be linked to anything you do outside of the game. I kill people online all the time, but I would not pick up a gun and go around shooting people. If you cant control your actions outside of the game and you are exposed to a game like that, its asking for trouble. People just have to be mature about it, its supposed to be fun. Its not like you can go downtown to shoot people! Its the thrill of doing that without the threat of being in trouble or actually hurting someone.

Oh man if I said anything like that to my dad I would get the crap beaten out of me tongue.gif (seriously)

And the violence in video games only influences little kids who don't know any better so it's the parent's responsability to keep their kids from playing the games.

I had to write an essay on this. Think I got an F.

Video game violence doesn't cause violence. Some of the nicest people I know play games like CS:S and Doom.

Before violent video games, there was violent television and violent movies. And let's not forget real life violence that has existed long before video games came about. Even if video games do cause a problem, it is certainly of negligible importance to everything else that we really should be looking at.

Video games are just an easy target for people with sticks up their asses to pick on smile.gif

For mature players, the violence plays no role in their everyday activities. In fact, it may even help them "vent off" their anger or frustration (positive outcome). But of the millions of people who play games like GTA, there are always a handful of kids who emulate the game and try to do what they see - whether it be murder, drive-bys or rape. These kids are not mature enough to be playing the game they are.

Does it really matter? If I have a kid, I would explain a few things that most parents should.

    1) This is a video game, and should not be done in real life
    2) Do not be immature about the game
    3) Use the game as a vent, instead of doing something along these lines in real life

For example, my 10 year old nephew plays GTA III to vent off any anger he has from a school day. And not like video games are very influential on them. The "I played GTA and decapitated someone because..." is just a scapegoat.

Some people just take games too seriously. I remember reading an article on a Chinese man who played Halo 2 way too much. After dedicating his life to H2, he decided to actually try a superjump from a building. Sad story is, his shields couldn't take the force so he died.

Ahh, I love playing games just to own people but I would never think about taking it too far. Especially taking another human's life or changing my morals because of one game.

I like how one of Jack Thompson's arguments was how the US has no laws against selling violent video games to children.. WHICH IT DOES (By law, children are NOT allowed to buy games with an M rating w/o an adult present).

However, this wouldn't be an issue, if parents did THEIR DAMN JOB. It's up to the parents to monitor what their kids are playing, and make sure they know what they're doing is all fantasy and SHOULD NEVER be brought into reality.

Parents need to actually look at what game their kids are buying. I watched a parent glance at a copy of Prey, hand it back to their kid (who couldn't have been more than about 12) and go "You can get this" after going back to her cell phone.

Course, it would help if store employees actually followed the law instead of trying to get that extra bit of cash from commision dry.gif

If a person can be influenced by a videogame, possibly one of the least emotive storytelling mediums available, to commit a crime, then honestly, they were probably pretty messed up to begin with.

Videogames do not in themselves engender violence in stable human beings, though they can act as a trigger in more unusual circumstances.

Man don't even get me started with all this. I have a HUGE discussion in my history class about video game violence and if it causes real life violence. There was an artical posted like 2 years ago about 2 young kids killing alot of their friends at a high school, and their teachers, because they were having an "off day". So what did the parents do? Did they take responsibility for themselves and say "we just aren't good parents" NO they BLAMED IT ON VIDEO GAMES! that is so inferiating, VIDEO GAMES DO NOT CAUSE REAL VIOLENCE. Video games teach Hand Eye Coordination. Not how to hold a pistol to someones head and blow their brains out. Sure there are some cases where if someone is mentally ill, they might be in a since influenced by games, but you know what you do then? DON'T LET THEM PLAY FREAKING VIDEO GAMES! There are so many solutions to all this crap, but does the Gov't want to step in and make it all better, no they don't feel like getting their hands dirty, and all they want to do is try to BAN violent video games because THEY DONT WANT TO GET OFF THEIR FAT ASS'S AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

If you're talking about the Columbine Massacre, and I think you are, there was a rather more pertinent reason for blaming videogames, rather than just a shirking of responsibility.
The entire day was planned out for months, and they practised on a modified Doom map, that was created as a mirror of their school.
In fact, in the videotape the pair made before the killings, one of the two, Eric Harris is quoted as saying; "It's going to be like ****ing Doom. Tick, tick, tick, tick... Haa! That ****ing shotgun is straight from Doom"

Columbine is definitely not a good example to take.

They created that mirror for their school. The game was not at all created to look like a school, so its not the games fault that they used a mod to change it, and just because they were quoted with that, does not mean thats what made them WANT to go kill everyone, they just said its like it. Sure yeah, taking a shotgun and shooting you're friend in the head is EXACTLY like killing some one eye'd flying monster thing, i mean the resemblence is uncanny.

So they may have "trained" in Doom, but their murderous mindset was not because of Doom dry.gif.

You seem to have missed the fact in my first post that I too do not believe that violent videogames have a discernable impact on stable humans.

I was simply stating that the Columbine incident was not a good example to take because of its very close relationship with a videgame environment.
It is undeniable that had these two students not had access to a modifiable, violent videogame, it is more than likely that their obsessions would not have come to a head in such a violent and destructive manner.

No matter what, they would have gone through with their plan, they would have found some other way to plan out, and train and stuff like that. A killer does not stop just because he loses a shoe or something, he has his goal set in mind, and he wants it.

It is a more likely scenario that the near-ruleless environment of the Doom maps allowed them to develop their murderous intentions from a niggling thought to full scale murder in a timescale otherwise unimaginable.

Columbine? The kids were crazy. You can't examine that case to influence desicion, because they had real mental problems. I'm not saying that from assumption either. It did play a part in their plan, though.
