This is just ignorance of people, Steve wouldnt have wanted this.

Backlash against stingrays since Irwins death.

QUOTE
SYDNEY, Australia (Sept. 12) - At least 10 stingrays have been killed since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was fatally injured by one of the fish, an official said Tuesday, prompting a spokesman for the late TV star's animal charity to urge people not take revenge on the animals.
Irwin died last week after a stingray barb pierced his chest as he recorded a show off the Great Barrier Reef.

Stingray bodies since have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state on Australia's eastern coast. Two were discovered Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said.

Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently catch the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice was uncommon. Stingrays often are caught in fishing nets by mistake and should be returned to the sea, Sumpton said.

Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's Wildlife Warriors conservation group, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for Irwin's death.

"It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said.

He said killing stingrays was "not what Steve was about."

"We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife," he said.

Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand.

They have a serrated spine up to 10 inches long on their tails, which they can lash when stepped on or otherwise frightened.

The spines emit toxins that can kill many small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people have died from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus.

Hornby said people should treat stingrays with caution, but "there is still no need to ... kill or mutilate these important animals."

Exactly! blink.gif Why try to 'avenge' Steve Irwin if you really don't know what he was about? Because if you did, you'd certainely know this would shame him.

Yeah, killing sting rays is definitely something Steve wouldn't want even though he got killed by one.

I hope a regulation comes out saying you can't kill them. They'll be endangered on the path we're going ohmy.gif

yeah if they are endangered this means people will pay £3 a month for a book manufactured by ethiopians and a letter made by a fat old man in a chair pretenting to be a stingray.

If you are going to kill stingrays to avenge someones death, at least make sure you kill the one that killed him, not a bunch of random ones.

I do think it is silly, but I can see why they are doing it. It may be a barbaric act of mis-directed revenge, but in their eyes, they are avenging Steve's death, I suppose.

okay, what good did he do? and i went scuba diving in hawaii, we literally walked on the sting rays there barbs moved so slow we kinda just danced around them, seriously, i dont think its easy to die to a sting ray, especailly not to the heart, what you would have to do is go right up next to it, then like jump into its swing...

He did fantastic things to make animals safer and our world safer. He's a hero. So don't say 'What good did he do?' because you're one of the very very few in the world who don't care that Steve is dead.

It not easy to die by a sting ray. In fact, it's rare that a stingray would even attack.

He raised amimal endangerment awareness and global warming awareness. For one person to do, that's saying a lot. He did so much for this world while he was alive and his legacy will live on.

And he was NOT retarded for getting stung! It wasn't his fault. The ray felt threatened because Steve and his cameraman were observing it. It was a defensive act with tragic results. He never provoked it or harrassed it. I know you didn't upfront say he was retarted, but you're basically saying that because of the way he died.
