So he needs a new rig. I just went and picked out some really good parts that should work amazingly well together. *note he likes AMD over Intel so is sticking with an X2*

My recommendations.

Processor - x2 5000

Mother Board - BIOSTAR TFORCE 550 - socket am2

Video Card - GeForce 7900GTX

Memory - OCZ Platinum

OS - Windows home

Power Supply - Aspire 520 watt

Sound Card - Creative sound blaster platinum (7.1 Audio)

Speakers - Creative Aspire

Case - His dream case

Hard Drive - Deckstar 400 gig

That is everything he really needs. Maybe some extra leds would be nice and I would suggest updating the heat sink on the processor. Other then that he would have an AMAZING rig, even one better then mine.

Total Shiped -$ 2,026.98

It is a cheap case as far as price goes, but I wouldn't get anything else. Its made of steal and has a good design. I would get this one if I was you.

Also you need drives. so if you want a CD/DVD drive or a CD/DVD burner or what. A DVD Rom drive is about 30 bucks.

get rid of that PSU and soundcard, if you're gonna give him topgrade shit, dont cheese out on a PSU/soundcard.>

OCZ PowerStream 520w for PSU
Creative X Fi XtremeMusic

I have an Audigy 2 (still better than what you picked) and x-fi's, it makes a big difference tongue.gif It took me a while to notice, but now its obvious to me

EDIT: yea i know he hates intel , just if you can show him this chart, do it plz (it is NOT biased.. true clock comparisons)

IPB Image

example : 2.2ghz conroe = 2.8ghz X2

It's not just about clockspeed, you have to add SPEC benchmarks, PPW and other measurments into the equation before choosing a processor.

PS) I still think you are making a mistake buying a AMD processor at this time. I've been a longtime AMD fan, but the latest generation, just isn't as good as Core2 processors. :)

The way I see it, you're computer is going to be outdated in a few years. Don't waste money on stuff you don't need.

Revolver Ocelot, sorry buddy thats DDR2.. and you're picking a 939 board with a 939 cpu....

DDR2 DOES NOT WORK ON 939 BOARDS.

like you said, the PSU suggestion is pointless, and why get a 7800GT when you can get a 7900GT for cheaper pretty much.. sad

30" + 30" does NOT equal 60"s.... you cant add the height AND width..

This is all 100% true. DDR2 in a 939 mobo....ROFL!!!! And 7900GT is cheaper and better then 7800GT. The 7950GT is $300 on the egg I believe.

Also, to Marine, who mentioned an "Aspire" 520w PSU, that thing sucks balls. The PSU is one of the most critical choices in a PC, and it is often skimped out on, due to the fact people think all it does is power the machine, so they all must be the same. Not saying you think that, but that PSU was and is a crappy choice.

yea and if any of you didnt know, 7900GT performance-wise beats a 7800GTX stock vs stock, and... if you want to overclock, big difference there too, 7900GT = 90nm.. 7800GT = 130nm = 7900GT ftw

7950GT beats the 7900GT because it has GDDR4 smile.gif yes, DDR4 is out now for GPU's

OWNED?

But yeah.

Bad choices anyways becuase most of the parts are for kick ass over clocking, while mungy is good, he isn't that good.

Everything I picked was picked with a new builder in mind. At the same time I kept in mind expandability options.

Yes we all know conroe's are more powerful, but amd fan boys will be amd fan boys.

That's whats awesome about Technology.

The thing is, all the self-proclaimed computer geniuses arguing about the best build are wasting their time. Why buy "the best" when you don't need it? You can get a computer that will do ANYTHING for an average user (and then some) for 600$.

There is really no reason (besides looks) to spend that kind of money on something.

The setup Marine has seems reasonable in my eyes, but those people spending upwards in the 4,000's are just wasting money.

So true.
My computer was around $600 and it has a 160gb HD and 512mb of ram, which will do anything you want except some hardcore gaming O.o

lol um.. yea 2GB in the new optimal for BF2, and obviously for the games of the future, I recommend at least a 7900GT for current games, if you have even a half-decent monitor, it will run a high resolution... which requires a good video card.... you can build a good comp for 800-1200 and it will be good for a while, but 500 is something like a cheap dell that runs word, btw pretty much every AMD fanboy @ EOCF is going conroe.. so I dont see that as a valid excuse anymore, but whatever
