Is there a way to have an intercafe run entirely on linux?
The main problems I see are:
1. Most games run on Windows.
2. How to setup the thing the cashier uses to "lock" a computer.
3. How to strip them down for non-admin access.

Anything you know that could help?

You can get an OEM copy of XP for about 70 bucks.

Plus, gaming & linux don't mix too well.

And that is for use on only 1 computer. multiply that by how many computers she wants to setup, and there you go.

WoW and CSS/CS 1.6 run fine on Linux - and those are the only games that people actually use, right?, as for the driver support, I find it good - my machine has pretty recently released parts and I didn't even have to download any drivers or recompile the kernel.

Freshmeat has some opensource internet cafe software(see: http://freshmeat.net...a...x=0&Go.y=0).

What do you mean by your third question? Why would you need to run them as root/admin?

She doesn't want them to run as root/admin...she wants users to have limited access.

anyways, it's simply to create users on the fly in unix. You'd have to spend time making a group and configuring the group access the way you want. Then, you'd simply have to add users to that group everytime they wanted to play a game.

You can find drivers if you really want to...just pick popular games that do work ok on unix.

I'm a GUY. I need to change my sig. tongue.gif

Bryan: That's quite expensive here. $1 here is like 50pesos. 50 pesos can give you a meal already. I can buy quality porn for even less on the streets. tongue.gif

juju: Thanks for the link. happy.gif There are also many many many games being played here. Such as:
Lineage 2, Silkroad Online, RF Online, Audition, O2Jam, Warcraft(for DOTA), Counterstrike, Perfect World, Pangya, Ragnarok, Flyff, Granado Espada, Supreme Destiny, RAN Online, Khan, MU Online, ROSE Online, Freestyle, Gunbound, Tantra, etc.

No Linux for you, then.

A large majority of those MMOs use GameGuard. GameGuard is notorious for not working on Linux, mainly because it needs the Windows kernel/API to run. The people at WineHQ haven't been able to emulate said functions yet.

Cheapest way IMO: http://www.microsoft...olkeys_isv.mspx

If you can get the key for less than: The number of computers you have multiplied by $80. Then you should get the Windows XP Pro VLK deal.
