Because of status quo and other things that some colleges (fortunately not all) have based on affirmative action many minorities which constantly try to better themselves and actually do really well like Asians get hurt. Asians are a minority in this country and they even have less population than african americans or hispanics they have a harder time because of the admission policies of some schools to get in.
There's also the problem where stereotypes might be encouraged because of this. If they allow a minority who is not ready for advanced college classes in there is a possibility that other students will look down on them and think that they as a race do not deserve to be there especially if the student performs poorly. It has good intentions but it's very dangerous and has turned on itself. Why not take them based primarily on merit?

what's worse is how affirmative action still exists even for those whos families are very well off

It's crap used to meet shit criterion.......I could have potentially gotten into a school (not naming names) for being not-a-minority-minority...I used middle eastern ancestry (the litle I have, haha) to promote some idea that I feel like a minority. And It worked (seeing as im a bit of a failure when it comes to the credentials when applying for school.)
