I just got an invitation to gmail but whenever I go to the link it says

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

does anyone know how I can fix this?

Get Firefox for a start. Download it and install it, if that doesn't work, come back.

Try restarting?
