I saw on ESPN outside the lines a story on kids doing MMA as young as 5yrs old. Now I personally like MMA as a sport and thoroughly enjoy watching the fights. But kids sparring at this young of an age just seems wrong to me.

What do you think?

As long as they have adequate protection like headguards then there's no reason it would be any more dangerous than other martial arts or boxing.

I agree with Laser.

As long as these kids have some gear on they are really just learning the rules of MMA. This, like any specific Martial Art, teaches a lot of discipline, which is good for kids to learn in one way or another IMO

I'm curious as to how they do submissions, but I would be as comfortable putting my 5 year old (which i don't have) into MMA as I would into wrestling.

I have no problem putting my son into martial arts if he becomes interested. But there is alot of sparring without gear and submissions are not regulated. I think its good to teach him discipline and how to defend himself but is this the way?

You've got the choice of lots of different martial arts, it doesn't have to be MMA. But if he really wants to learn MMA you could always go and watch some sessions at various places before you sign up, then you'll know what kind of safety things they practice in each institution.

Thinking more about submissions, I'm sure these Kids know what tapping is, as well as when stuff hurts, 5 year olds don't "act tough", they will yell lol. Also, I don't think kids these size really have the strength to just snap a limb or anything like that.

I'm sure it's as dangerous as wrestling or any martial art.

I started taekwondo when I was 9. Not really the same as MMA in terms of submissions and grappling, but by the time I was ten (a couple belt levels) I was sparring and taking hits with the rest of them. Not a big deal.

it only takes 8lbs of pressure to break a bone. these kids are more than capable of that.

go here and watch it...some of it seems ok and safe but then there is some outrageous fighting among kids

Shit, I think it's Brazil that they have kids that age doing Muay Thai. Kicking bamboo splints to build calluses on their shins and the like.

All I can say is I feel bad for the kid that decides to fight one of those kids.

Well i dunno about this i watched the video and some of those kids look way too young. I'd say a starting age of 10 or so is probably alright...

Seems fine to me, I wish I learned MMA at 5 biggrin.gif It's all safe I'd presume

Like Spade said, wouldn't want to be the kid that decides to try and fight one of them.

Fuck dude if I had a 5 year old I would make him spar, like, every day. I'd have him fight my buddies' kids Pokemon style.

I would put my kid in mma in a heart beat if he wanted to learn. I think it is a great sport that not only teaches physical abilities but also teaches you great mentally. I would though check out the place I am having my kid train at and make sure it is right for my kid.

i dont mind him learning these things for self defense purposes but some of these parents are forcing their kids to fight. Now how does forcing them teach them discipline?

Down south they have been mixing Muay Thai with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Silva) and thats why you're seeing it more spread out

you guys are bringing in the most out there situations though, in regular class's and what not I would like it allot if when I have a kid he would want to learn mma. I would not push it on him/her in any way but if he/she wanted to learn I would be happy
