The British government condemned China's execution of a British national Tuesday on drug smuggling charges.

...The British Foreign Office confirmed Tuesday's execution, however, there was no immediate comment from China.

...Ahead of carrying out the death sentence, China said it had followed the law:

"This case has always been handled according to law. During the trial, the defendant has been guaranteed his legal rights," Jiang Yu, spokeswoman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said last week. "Everyone knows that international drug smuggling is a grave crime."

Full article here.

Well that's a little different than the other deaths I've read about recently......

Yeah, that part of the world has some very harsh laws concerning the drug trade. I think it was Indonesia that executed(or almost) a woman for some ecstasy they found in her luggage.

Edit: it seems she got 3 months in prison

In addition, 'the Bali Nine are a group of young Australians sentenced to death by an Indonesian court for trying to smuggle more than 8kg of heroin out of Bali. At least face three execution.'

The law applies to everyone, it has to be fair.
The guy was trying to smuggle so much drugs. No wonder he was a mental case or it was just one of those bullshit out of nowhere excuses that defendants use as a last resort.
There are thousands of others like him in CHina that is smuggling drugs and the law has to deal with all of them.

Unless of course he didn't know he was carrying drugs and his mental state was taken advantage of by actual drug traffickers.

Well i still think its a bit extream, he wasnt mentaly stable and could have easliy been taken advante of or not understand the full concequences of being caught.

Also the punishment itself i think doesnt exactly fit the crime.

Fair enough they have to treat everyone equaly but still....

The british documents provided claiming that he had mental illness had no evidence or substance to back it.
ANd there had previously been no case of him being under any mental illness.

He had 4kgs of heroin, and wanted to be a paki-popstar.

There are just too many defending arguments of people claiming to be inluenced unwillingly.

You try carrying even 2kg of heroin to any of the following countries such as Singapore,UAE, Indonesia etc for example, you'll get the same result.
People know the rules and consquences, and if they are stupid enough to do such things in ignorance or bravadory then they deserve to be punished by whichever means that had been precedent and set before.

with the case regarding a Australian Vietnamese, Van Tuong Nguyen.

He was caught at Singapore Chnagi airport carrying a measely 392.6 grams of heroin, already 26 TIMES the amount that would warrant a death sentence in Singapore!
EVen the president appealed for him several times but was hanged anyway.

Again you assume that he actually had knowledge of what he was carrying. It wouldn't be the first time that an innocent person has been tricked into carrying illegal substances through airports.

    Can you provide some examples?
QUite frankly most of the cases like Schappell Corby and Leslie, was their fault and they had full knowledge but just cos they're AUstralian, they get some ridiculous protection and benefits of the doubt.
WHich is quite laughable, they also claimed that they were tricked which is most likely bullshit.

I dont think its just about the fact he didnt realise what he was doing, realisticly you would have to be in a pretty poor mental state not to understand your doing something wrong.

Obviously if he knew that death was the concequence we will never know.

But more relevent is the fact that these "drug smugglers" arent the problem. They get paid to do a job, or bribed/blackmailed or whatever.

Its not these people who should be faceing the penalties, its the drug lords who make these people do the job.

Goes to show that it makes such a huge difference, the country you're convicted and sentenced in, specially for drug-related crimes. 20 years for marijuana? In this country you get a warning if you carry a little too much of it, a fine in the worst case, maybe, a short term in prison if you have the intent to distribute on a large scale.

I'm not saying either is right or just, but it goes to show that you may want to pick the country you commit your crimes in very, very carefully.

    Can you provide some examples?

Zoe McGarry, British girls in Ghana, many others.

Convicting the mules is extremely pointless (although they obviosuly shouldn't get away with it either) as the true drug lords keep on running their business with fresh mules anyway. You can always find someone deseprate enough to do it willingly, or inattentive enough to trick.

Agreed, but these mofo drug lords are usually the ones in power or have very strong connections.
I know for a fact about many in China, like some old bitch druglord has strong connections with the police and mayor in her area.
They traffick loads and loads of drugs, and young girls.
Heck she even has like 10 male servants to satisfy her sexual needs (Guys don't get funny thoughts, cos this old lady is like in her 50's)
But it's like that everywhere though, I don't think corruption will ever be stopped but they can't just let people get away with things, or shit will begin to escalate and multiply. The venom will become more potent and hell no, they don't want that to happen.

Some authorities will just do some bust up just before re-elections or shit just to make it seem like they're doing something.
Like close down a few brothels in China, cos they aren't paying the dough to the police to keep it runnin.
WHile other famous ones that the officers from the police regularly go and relax and get high gets more happy customers, cos they payup.

I think this is the same in most countrys.

Drug lords = major cash for the country and usualy are above the law (well the bigger ones anyway)

But thats why alot of other countrys dont kill the smugglers as it doesnt help anything

It doesn't even work as a deterrent, because the human mind is programmed to believe that everything will turn out alright. Bad things happen to other people. If we didn't have that mechanism, we'd kill our collective selves. If deterrents like the death penalty worked, there would logically be no severe crimes. There are other reasons why some people end up in jail time after time after time.

Still, just because that's what they do doesn't mean we should agree with it.

I'm fairly unsympathetic about a lot of these situations. For the most part I feel that if you're stupid enough to commit a crime in a country that's known to be ruthless in it's reaction to said crime, there's little that should be done for you regardless of nationality. Difficult when mental state is involved but if you're supposedly vulnerable enough to be taken advantage of in such a manner perhaps you shouldn't be travelling the world alone in the first place...All very odd.
