I have a feeling that women age 18-34 account for most of First Book's donations. It's just targeted marketing to yuppie white women who want to save the world and feel good when they donate.

In Topic: Genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida

11 March 2015 - 05:06 PM

I study biochemistry for my undergrad, and I think it's a good idea. These males carry a lethal mutation that would cause all of its offspring to die (not sure how they raised these mosquitos though). Lethal mutations don't get passed on to the next generation and so this mutant population will be self-limiting. Although I'm not sure what the threat is even if these recombinant mosquitos bite you, for the same reason that you're not going to get cystic fibrosis if you cannabalize somebody with cystic fibrosis.

They might have to send out more of these guys on a regular basis to keep the population down, but it's a hell of a better option than spraying insecticides that mosquitos (and other insects) are only going to adapt to. They're also not messing with viruses per se, which is good because, again, you don't want them to adapt.

Unless the ecosystem in the Florida Keys stands upon a delicate balance of mosquito population (perhaps as food for insect-eating birds), I don't see the problem with this.

In Topic: I make bad choices even though I know they're bad

If you don't want to help her, you don't have to and that's the bottom line. It sounds like you're really ehhhhh towards helping her and I think it's hard for you to say know even though you're thinking it. You don't have to worry about flaking as long as you put your foot down somewhere. It's more like you acquiesced to what someone else wants rather than making a conscious choice yourself, know what I mean?

Also,

6) She can't seem to make time to fit in with your schedule yet you are changing yours...at the risk of YOUR grades and the good relationships you've created over time. If I was in her position, I'd make as much time as I possibly could to spend with you. If finals were important to her she would do the same, screw everything else.

This, this so much. When I ask people for help I'm extremely conscious about having to use up their time. She should be treating your time with respect.

In Topic: Are Grades in School a Reflection of Your Potential Success in Life?

16 November 2014 - 11:39 AM

I think that for most med schools, grades are pretty much at the very bottom of list in regards to importance. They will use low grades as a sifting tool to through handfuls of applicants out, but MCAT, essays, interviews, experience are all much more important than GPA.

I think it's different in the United States. In Canada, performance on the MCAT isn't emphasized as much, especially because many schools don't require it (some because they're French, others because meh). Also, our GPA cutoffs tend to be higher. The words of wisdom that I've picked up is to focus focus focus on your GPA which should be your priority because it gets your foot through the door, ie above 85% of all other applicants (the interview stage takes about 50% of the remainder).

Jokes aside, to answer the OP, depending on where you go grades will be used to judge one's potential success in a career.
