Sadly, the pressure put upon Japanese students to excel in thier studies can cause the children, especially in thier teenage years, to do strange and interesting (albiet on a morbid level) things.
I happen to be going down some odd lines of thought with this. While it was not justified that the student burn down his house, leaving his family inside, I must wonder if possibly the arson would have been less of a loss than the boy would have incurred had his parents found out above his below par grade. Depending on the parental units involved, it very well may have been a case of his life, or thiers (sadly enough) and he may have made the choice based on the human desire for self preservation and instinct to survive. Or possibly his family would not have been so very harsh upon him, but he simply feared for the worse?
So many paths of thought that could be taken... Quite a few of them dark and disturbing.

Welcome to Codex, Richard.
I too, am new here; and though we came for different purposes, perhaps we share some interest in the community spirit here. Let us hope for long hours spent vegging on the forums, eh?

I, for one, am a huge fan of the Full Metal Alchemist series, including the Movie. I watched the first few episodes on Adult Swim, then decided to dig up the original version and watch that instead. I've seen the whole thing...
I do wish there was more closure at the end of the series; while the movie does knot some of the untied ends, it also leaves much to be desired and assumed. In my opinion, there is plenty of grounds for a sequel to the movie, or possibly an entire new series to continue from the television plot. But, who knows?
Love the series, love the movie, adore my manga collection. I just really wish there was more. It's sad to see it end...

Seriously, thank you all... I've not felt this welcomed into a community for quite some time. It's a good feeling. Maybe I'll stick around Codex a little longer than I would have otherwise.

You make that sound like a bad thing...
No worse than my habit to go for several days on end without sleep, only to lie down and decide it isn't worth it...
Sleep is overrated. Insomnia for life!
