So i'm on a three hour commute (one way) to get to the main branch of my university.

Anyway, it's a stiff crowd in the big city. In a small town, you don't get within five feet of anyone without eye contact, and some kind of verbal or nonverbal greeting.
Whats with this whole ignoring people thing? I was trying to make small talk before class (a small class at that) with some people at my table. It was painful.

I think small towns have a certain warmth and friendliness to them that you can't get in a city.

Discuss.

Also, other good/bad things to do with cities/small towns

I come from a fairly nice small(ish) town and then moved to London just before university. Now spend every day plotting to move back out of the city. :p

I actually know what you mean, to an extent

I went to high school for 6 years (6-12) in a private school, a MENNONITE private school aka everyone knew each other and I even got to know a lot of my friend's families.

Now I go to a school with over 250000 students, and it's such a big change. I don't make eye contact with anyone and I usually just sit alone and would rather be alone than for myself to talk to people

In labs I do my best to talk to people, but sometimes the people are just SO rude and uninterested I get discouraged :/ So I just text all day xD

I was born and raised in a big city and love it... I love the access to so much within a relatively short distance. Fast food for instance... if one McDonald's pisses me off, I can choose not to go there anymore and still not have to drive more than 5 mins to get to another one. There are bad parts to it though... rush hour traffic being a huge downside.. luckily I know the back roads and can still wiggle around the major freeways to get to where I need to go.

Small towns have their good sides as well.. I've gone to a few of them and I must say I love the friendliness... but I feel I get way too bored there.. at least in a big city there's always something happening.

I have to put in my support for the big city. In terms of jobs and opportunity, the city has way more to offer.

My friend lives in a small town - and although i'm sure people are more friendly (everyone knows one another etc) he has a tough time finding jobs.

The nightlife also can't be compared as there is just so many things to do in a city downtown.

Nothing to stop you commuting from one to the other. :p It's what I shall be doing from the summer and it won't take me that much more time.

What I loved was the small town atmosphere amidst the big city environment. I lived in the big city, but at school and with my friends, it was like we were in a small city. I miss it :'(

Although I don't think I could stand living in a small town 24/7 O.o I need, you know, Starbucks and shit

Really! I wish it were like this. I bet if I really lived in the city I would never take advantage of the nightlife/whatever--would just stay at home and play computer like always.

The atmosphere is so much calmer in a small town. I personally enjoy walking in a store and having a conversation with the cashier. On the other hand with that, in a small town you can never escape gossip. Everyone knows everything about you, and it doesn't matter if it's true or not.

I prefer living on small cities (not small towns). Daily transportation on big citiess can be very time consuming.
And altough bigger cities offer more entertainment and that stuff, I don't live the night life and I just can go to a big city for the concerts and that stuff.

Yeah, small city is the best compromise to me. Small towns also tend to be Republican and Christian, which isn't very good for me. :/

Hehe, so true. The republican part is fine with me, but all the hypocritical "Christians" around my town are just...annoying.

Not sure about the US. But in Canada, if you don't live in a major city, towns are hours away =p

    Small town for living.

A 20 minute drive to the nearest suburbs, and 40 to downtown is just about perfect.

All the convenience with none of the crap.

But I even like to live outside the small town on a few acres just a couple miles away

I lived in Montreal, a big city, for my entire life and 4 months ago i moved to, what i consider a small town, british columbia. The people here are much friendlier that's for sure .. but i like the city better. I find people in a large city to be a lot more accepting of what people here would consider weird or abnormal. People here a lot more judgmental whereas in a big city people tend to judge you less based on first appearances.

So .. i'm definitely a big city girl.

    Si tecum mihi, care Martialis,
    securis liceat frui diebus,
    si disponere tempus otiousm
    et verae pariter vacare vitae,
nec nos atria nec domos potentum
    nec litis tetricas forumque triste
    nossemus nec imagines superbas;
    sed gestatio, fabulae, libelli,
    campus, porticus, umbra, Virgo, thermae,
haec essent loca semper, hi labores.
    nunc vivit necuter sibi, bonosque
    soles effugere atque abire sentit,
    qui nobis pereunt et imputantur.

Born and raised in the city.

Everything's within reach here, although even the small towns/villages here have all the necessities. It's def. more convenient in the city though. Restaurants and shops everywhere, and IT things are easily found. If I lived in an obscure small town for example, I would never be able to get my graphics tablet. I had to go all the way down to one of the biggest cities in the country just to get it.

That said, people here are...What's the world - isolated? Community is less tight-knit. There's no friendly area-wide meetings, no gatherings or celebrations except for churches. Everyone just keeps to themselves, celebrate events at home, and keep to their own little circle of friends. Community's definitely better in small towns.

It's a big city for me though, mostly because I've been raised with all the conveniences and can't imagine life without.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Usually people are just focused on where they're going and what they're about to do. Everyone is doing their own thing. I love the anonymity of living in a big city. I've been in a small town and it's hell constantly having people know you, try to talk to you, get into your business, etc. And small towns always shut down early. In LA there's always something to do, even at 3 am.

I love big cities. The people, the atmosphere, the amount of crap you can do at whatever time you want.

Traffic's a bitch though, and I'm one impatient person.

Well, I grew up in a big city myself and I kinda like the fact that you can just ignore people :p I would go crazy if I have to greet someone people all the time.. Even if I see someone I have met I mostly prefer just to look the other way, acting as if I dont see them.. unless theyre good friends. Wow im such a nice person.
It's probably better to grow up in a smaller city though, get to know your neighbours and such :p

Hmm. Big city definitely. I'm so tired of being surrounded by small-time hopes and dreams. Plus it's easier to kill yourself if it doesn't work out how you planned.
