You NEED the epilogue of book 3 but apart from that I think you can start with book 4 if you can't be bothered to double up on what you've seen...
I'm sure you could find this online and just buy #4.

Don't take my word for it, been a while since I read them.I was just about to tag you in my previous post -- thank you! I'm off to Barnes and Noble now. Maybe I'll look at the epilogue in book 3 while I'm there.
Fo'sho but he'll have a serious wtf moment if he DOESNT read that final chapter first.I'm sure you could find this online and just buy #4.

@punkrockbigmouth thoughts on where to pick the books up from after season 4?

Oh 100% agree but I think he should read the whole series haha. Maybe I'm just a noob but I couldn't jump from watching a show to picking up where it left off in a book. Far too much detail in the books and very different mediums. I'd need the same format to get the same enjoyment.
However I guess I get it because people are slow reads or don't have a lot of time

I have a question for those of you who have read the books. Where does the show leave off in the book series? I know I shouldn't pick up reading the books in the middle of the show, but I simply cannot wait for next year for the show to come out.
@Adam - honestly, if you start from book 4, you're going to be really fucking confused. Book 4 (A Feast for Crows) and 5 (A Dance with Dragons) happen simultaneously, but are split by characters, so half of the characters are in book 4 and the other half are in book 5. You don't see Dany, Tyrion, Jon Snow, and several others for all of book 4, and a lot of characters who were until then insignificant or unintroduced take center stage (many never having been in the tv show, like characters from Dorne and the Iron Islands).
From the wiki, POV characters in each:
A Feast For Crows is the weakest and least entertaining out of all the books, in my opinion. Starting with it is a bad idea.
I honestly recommend starting from the beginning, or if you MUST skip, then from the beginning of book 3, A Storm of Swords. The show has changed some pretty key moments at the end of book 3 this season, and the context is necessary to get what's going on. If not you'll be reading it and go "wtf is he talking about, that's not what happened in the show" and it will pretty much ruin everything. To me it felt like the last episode was a pretty defining moment in the series where the show story and the book story are going to go in significantly different directions, not for everything but for some.
They're long books, but good enough that you read them quickly. The audiobook versions read by Roy Dotrice are excellent as well, and can be found on thepiratebay.

Yeah... the thing about book 4 though is that it does not pick up the stories of Dany, Jon Snow, Team Dragonstone or Tyrion... so I don't know how a tv viewer will feel about a book that centers mainly around Cersei, the Dornish, and the Iron born. Of course if you SKIP Feast, you'll wonder how the fuck Arya and Sam Tarly got to where they are at that point.
More hate for Dany Targ...

Here's my new plan. I bought A feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons, but I've also acquired the audiobooks for which I will listen to on my drive over to San Antonio (~9 hours). Thank's both of you for your input :]

There's nothing in San Antonio worth 9 hours of driving.

Also Adam if you really want to skip stuff, Catelyn's chapters are useless, Sansa's are kinda useless too but they give a bit more insight to the courtly intrigue imo, which balances it.

Dude this is hilarious.
Is anyone having GOT withdrawals??

But Sansa's character is really becoming better after she stops being that idiot romantic child. She starts to play the game and it's good to see her doing something and not moaning.
I still need to finish the books, but I'll get there ![]()

I always watched it on my laptop in live streaming. Season 4 aired at 3 am in the morning where I live but who cares.
I'm super excited even though I like the tv series less and less because of the direction it's taking compared to the books.
