What have you used before? Are you leaning towards a pill? If so, would you prefer the monthly cycle or once every 3 months? How long before you might consider having kids (if you are considering that in the future)? I am not a lady, but I think those questions are important so we can know what would be best for you.

I was on depo for 5+ years but it's not recommended for me anymore. I don't want my period but if I have to have it, it's fine. I don't think I want kids for ~5 years. I'm open to options of anything pill/implant/iud so I want to hear others' opinions on those and their experiences.

    Ladies I need opinions.

I need to get back on birth control (for various reasons, number one being no babies), and after talking with my doctor she gave me a few things to look into.

Firstly she said NO to depo, mirena or anything with (high)progestin in it, due to struggles with my weight and other medical factors.

She suggested looking into copper iud (i'm scared of this), nuva ring, or low progestin pills.

What are you on? Pro's/Con's? Would you recommend it?

I'm too lazy to read back through 27 pages and I know this has been briefly discussed before, but instead of google answers, I want real people opinions.

I'm sure everyone will be shocked to hear this, but I use the rhythm method. Pros: non-invasive, no pills, no chemicals, no foreign objects, nothing artificial, you get to touch yourself inappropriately. Cons: not 100%, time consuming, easy to mess up.

It's also called calendar-based contraception or periodic abstinence. You basically figure out when you ovulate and don't have sex during that time.

    ahh gotcha.

While I'm glad that works for you, I don't think I have the time or patience to figure that out, nor do I want to abstain from sex :/

You can't avoid sex or use a condom for a couple days a month? I can understand not having time or patience though, it takes both.

well considering I'm not having sex atm, I think I could.. I was just implying that I don't have the patience to figure out my body and would rather take something that guarantees I wont get preggo when I do end up having sex again.

edit: AND I really don't want to have a period anymore, so I know birth control can help with that, and I'm not ready to get my girlybits mangled and not be able to have kids in the future.

I haven't been on any form of contraceptive for many years (I doubt that's a shocker considering the three kids lol). However, when I was on the pill, before my oldest son was conceived, it was very effective. I know this because literally the first time I had sex after going off the pill, I got pregnant with Braden. Before that I was an irresponsible 15-18 year old and I had sex unprotected ALL the time and fortunately never got pregnant.

I'm actually looking into my birth control options as well. Right now my main concerns are finding something that helps clear up my skin, won't make me gain weight, and will prevent me from getting pregnant. I don't like having to remember to take my pill at the same time every day, but I think I might have some funky hormonal imbalances going on and not getting regular periods would make me paranoid, so I might be stuck with the pill.

I've only ever taken oral contraceptives, and I've had mixed experiences with them. I think it's really just a matter of finding the right pill. Last time I was on birth control, which was a few years ago, I took my sister's leftover bc that she was prescribed for a medical issue (not the wisest decision on my part, but it was free and convenient) and I felt nauseated nearly 100% of the time for the duration of the ~4 months I was taking it. On the other hand, I took Yaz as a teenager without any problems that I can recall, but it's been linked to some serious side effects, like fatal blood clots. I haven't consulted with a gynecologist yet this time around, so I'm unsure what newer medications might be available now.

The rhythm method is only 75-87% effective, by the way. I wouldn't rely on it.

It's actually as effective as anything else, when used perfectly. It's just much harder to use perfectly than taking a pill every day and not throwing it up.

How is remembering to take a pill daily so difficult? I don't want to hijack the topic at hand but I am curious. People brush their teeth daily (I hope), some shower daily, etc. They all go to work, school, etc. It seems like this is almost the case with all women. I can understand if you just started taking it, then maybe getting into a routine would be difficult, but every night at 10 PM I tell my girlfriend "Uhhh birth control" and she looks at me like this I'm speaking a foreign language. It's not like she's been taking it for two years or anything.

That ends my mini rant. Good luck with finding a suitable BC solution Rocket.

That study only accounts for the sympto-thermal method, though, which combines several fertility-awareness based methods. The article also states that "perfect use" means abstaining from sex for 7-10 days each month, and up to two weeks when using other related birth control methods.  :/

out of sight, out of mind?

That used to be a problem for me, but since I'm on other medications that I have to take daily, I've gotten much better. I find putting it somewhere where it's in my face, helps reminds me. My meds are on my bathroom counter, it's the first place i visit in the morning, so I know to take them otherwise I'd probably forget too.

sounds like you are in the same boat with me, I only really had a brief discussion with my doctor yesterday about BC since I was in to see her for another reason and we didn't have time to discuss in length.

Low or No progestin is best for not gaining weight in general, I also need something to help with acne (as I only really break out during my period), and she said there are a couple new brands out there but failed to give me the names -_- so I'm furiously googling trying to find something that helps.

I'll be making an appt in the next week or two to discuss BC options more in depth with her, so I'll let you know what I find out or what I get seeing as we're in the same boat.

It's not that remembering to take the pill is too difficult, especially since you can easily set an alarm to remind yourself. My issue has always been finding a convenient time to take the pill every day. It's hard when you don't have a regular daily routine (not everyone works, goes to school, etc.). I wake up and go to bed at different times every day, I shower and brush my teeth whenever I feel like it or when I happen to be leaving the house, and if I am busy, I can't always just drop what I'm doing to take my birth control immediately. I rarely forget to take my birth control altogether, but it's extremely frustrating when it does happen because I have to wait a week before I can trust the pill to be effective again. Being obligated to do anything at the same time every single day with no exceptions is annoying.

Well, not everyone has a good memory you know :p I have an alarm set, but sometimes I turn it off then go back to what I was doing. Then a bit after I'm like WAIT SHIT THE PILL LMAO OOPS BETTER TAKE THAT!!!

Also @Rocket and @Trichomes, I'm on Rigevidon and so far its been great!! The only side effect I got from it was my titties were sorta sore for like the first week or two being on it, but nothing but positive things have happened since I've been on it ^^ No weight gain, hardly any acne, no period pains and all that crap (and most importantly!! No babies lmao). I have no idea if it has high progestin in it though, and you get your period on it too :x

    Hope I helped out a bit!! ^^

    Yep...

Like I said, I don't usually completely forget to take the pill, but I frequently end up taking it late because I get distracted. I still get nervous about the pill's efficacy if I'm too irregular with the time I take it every day.

@Rocket I'm take Loestrin FE at the moment, and overall my experience has been..meh. I spot pretty often on this but I have awful side effects with other pills that have more hormones. :/ Other than that I don't break out or have any weight gain on it. So I would rather take this and spot than have to deal with cramps and craziness I get with other pills. I still haven't found one that's 100% 'right' for me. I am tempted to try an IUD because I do not plan on getting pregnant any time soon.

I'm the same as you guys with having an alarm to take my pill and sometimes I forget I turned it off and take it late.. I just don't have any other daily meds to take so it's easy for me to forget or get distracted.
