What if they don't realize they have intimate, romantic feelings? There are plenty of people who have no idea that they love someone until someone else points it out. Sitcoms are built on that shit.

Then it's not an affair. Affair implies intention.

Yes, it would be. If he feels it is inappropriate, then it would be because it is hurting his feelings. I think that if I disagreed and maintained the relationship behind his back, then I would be engaging in an emotional affair regardless of whether I think it is platonic or not because my emotions (romantic or otherwise) would be invested in a way that was unhealthy to our relationship.

That's stupid. You're saying if Yung thinks that you're having an emotional affair with someone, then you definitely are, completely irrespective of the circumstance? That renders the phrase virtually meaningless.

Lip-kissing on family is fucking weird. Even with my girls, I go a half inch above the head and make a smacking noise. Unless I'm sleeping with you, you don't get kisses on the face if you're over a year old. That's all there is to it.

You don't actually kiss your children? You hover your lips over them and make lip-smacks?
That's weird.

Sometimes things happen and they don't know they had intentions to do it until it's too late.

Yes. He knows me as well as anyone else. If he thinks I'm getting too involved with someone, then I probably am. If it's hurting our relationship, then I'm too involved with the other person.

My kids think it's weird too.

Totally avoiding contact is a bit excessive, it's just the kissing-on-the-lips between family members which I find very strange really.

I don't like touching people. I hug them so they don't get a complex, but kissing is out of my comfort zone.

I am a very affectionate person and I love to give my babies kisses. However, I don't find it all that strange/weird when parents don't show physical affection towards their children. My sister in law is very similar to you in how she interacts with my nephew, and I don't see an issue with it as long as the kids are happy and healthy and know that they are loved ^u^

Also, some kids don't want to be hugged or touched. I'm doing some people a favor by not kissing on them.

Really? I lip-kiss my mum and dad, and little brother to annoy him if I feel like it.  Maybe it's a cultural thing?

I think it's a personal thing. My step-daughter does lip-kissing with her mom's family. I have an uncle that will hug you for like a minute to a minute and a half solid. It just makes me uncomfortable.

I also don't like other people breathing on me, so there's that.

That's fair enough! Yeah super-long hugs make me feel a bit weird too, especially if the person smells horrible (I do work in a dementia care home so it happens a lot :p )

Alright so what this boils down to is really just a few simple factors:

Intention: The intention to cheat may or may not be an intentional thing, however people who put themselves into compromising situations will find themselves to be the cheater more often than not in the eyes of not just their lover, SO, fling, but also in the eyes of others. What this point boils down to is intention to cheat/hurt the SO, it would be futile to state that intention of cheat/hurt SO is always there or never there as that boils down to situation and opinions.

Emotional Connection: As already stated a heavy factor for most would seem to be whether or not there has ever been an emotional or sexual attraction attraction or history between the two individuals in question. Since there is a history of this kind of relationship it stands to reason that the relationship either:

    • Never actually ended
    • Could be rekindled
    • Could extend beyond what is known between other partners
    • Could cause irreparable damage to trust between other partners
    • Could cause jealousy when there was previously none between other partners

Trust: Another key factor that comes into play is trust. Everyone would like to say that they trust their SO most have trouble actually doing so. In that event their SO points themselves in a compromising position such as outlined here it could cause damage to their relationship beyond just that with this new or former partner. Trust is vital for the health of a relationship and a relationship that has had trust damaged is a sick relationship that can take years to heal.

Personal Opinions: The final main factor that comes into play is personal opinion. Clearly we're all a very opinionated bunch of individuals here it does not negate the fact that for the most part we all agree that it boils down to personal opinions and preferences. Everyone interprets every situation differently and thus handle it differently as well. While though we all have different opinions regarding what is and isn't okay it is still down for the individual to decide. It's not necessarily about jealousy but personal preference in not wanting to have their SO in a potentially compromising situation. If they respect their SO then they should take the time to sit down and talk things through, respecting their SO means respecting them even if they aren't around.

They're sick and they actually kiss each other. I'm not and I don't put my mouth on them, in spite of the fact that I come into contact with about a billion more germs than they do. Bias or not, it still makes sense.

It makes more sense that you have a better immune system due to your higher contact rate.

Medically speaking that's how it works. The more you're exposed to the stronger your immune system works. That's how vaccinations are effective for fighting diseases.
