So I recently ran across a quote describing my home town, Saint Louis, Missouri. It struck me as very true. The quote is from a letter written by T.S. Eliot, a poet of some note.

It is self-evident that St. Louis affected me more deeply than any other environment has ever done. I feel that there is something in having passed one's childhood beside the big river, which is incommunicable to those people who have not.

Are there any sayings or descriptions of your hometown that struck you as really good? Those of you from NYC or London will no doubt have many to choose from. But if you had to pick one, which would it be?

My home town is mostly desert, but I happen to live right next to a fairly large river, which is always fun to fish/swim in. There aren't really any interesting things to do though. :p

The place grew around The Hanford Site, which is where they made some of the plutonium for the World War II era nukes. Cool stuff.

-edit- Oh...you meant as in land? Uh, not a known town but surrounded by towns everyone knows, so it's like a random ass town you go through that actually has some "famous" things in it, at least famous for chicago land area.

I believe the Beach Boys wrote Surf City after my town? Or it was inspired or something.

This is how I'd describe it nowadays though:

A cesspool of bros, their hoes, and lifted trucks. With a sprinkle of suburban families that enjoy driving prius, minivans, or oversized SUVs (way too big for these people to be driving, I mean they make semi truck turns in smart cars for crying out loud) as slow and horrible as possible. And a dash of Christians who believe marriage is too holy for same genders to partake, but cheat on their spouses.

    Home Sweet Home.

my hometown is taiping. it's just a quiet town in the north of malaysia. the name "taiping" is chinese which means "quiet", so it's really fitting. malaysia is a tropical country and my hometown is said to be the wettest place in the whole country because of its location on the side of the hill. it has the first train station, zoo and museum in malaysia so that's pretty cool lol. that's why it's called the heritage town here.

Beach town. Tourist town. Peninsula on a peninsula - surrounded by water. Crowded but not busy if that makes sense (I live in Florida's second smallest and most densely populated county. The population is about 1 million. 17,000 in my town and my town is only about 5.1 square miles).

I think my town is pretty. I live near so many parks that are right on the water. I'm also close enough to the beach that I could walk or bike there. So was my high school so every Wednesday, when we got out 2 hours early, everyone would be at the beach.

I also remember being able to faintly see the space shuttles take off as a kid and feel the sonic booms when they would re-enter the atmosphere. I don't even live near Cape Canaveral.

I've lived in the same house since I was four, but before that, we only lived maybe like two miles away. I never understood why everyone thought Florida was all about old people because my town always seemed so young.

There were a lot of people in my high school. My graduating class was about 500 people and in total, my high school had 2,500 students. It was known as the "rich, snobby, white kid school."

I have a love/hate relationship with my hometown and I miss it a lot when I'm at school. I'm eight miles away from the beach in South Carolina and that's the furthest from the beach that I have ever lived. It kind of sucks.

I'm feeling crazy nostalgic right now. I want to go home lol.

Not descriptions per se, but quotes about:

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

"I'm leaving because the weather is too good. I hate London when it's not raining."

I don't think anybody has ever said anything about the village I'm originally from. It's a tiny little place in the middle of the countryside. :p

This pretty near sums up my home town:

"Well you better not blink, don't drive too fast, keep your eyes wide open or you'll drive right past beautiful downtown McAdam"

I don't really consider myself to have a "home town". I grew up all over the place - but always within Surrey. So I have a home county, which happens to be one of the Home Counties.

It's green and rolling, and really quite lovely.

They did announce a state of emergency not that long ago due to the high violent crime rates...
