NIcknames. What are yours and tell us the stories behind them. Do you have any for people in your life with particularly amusing back stories? These days, I don't think anybody actually uses anything but nicknames for me...

Ali is of course not what's on my birth certificate; it's short for Alexandra. Nobody uses Alexandra except for official documentation and my mother (and Waser when he wants to irritate me <_<).

A lot of my friends call me AC, which were my initials before I got married. I have no idea why this came about really but it's stuck. *shrugs* The Boy then used that and twisted it to Ace not long after we first met which is still what he mostly calls me. The older crowd also use my maiden name a lot still, and various plays on it and weird word association type links (examples to come of how our friendship group thinks!) that make no sense to anyone who has met me in the past 5 years, or doesn't know the thought process to get to them.

In terms of slightly odder ones, one of my very best friends calls me Kit, which is just that he used to call me kitten as a sort of pet name which then got shortened. He introduces me to quite a lot of people as Kit, who then presume it's a nickname for Catherine or something and are very confused when they find out I'm called Ali.

Then there's a small group of the girls who call me Ginny, which people presume is an HP reference but is actually a gin reference which will surprise precisely nobody. Ginny is how one of my friends once said she would describe me and she likes it all the more because my initials now are AA.

In terms of giving nicknames, I will shorten everyone's names to one syllable wherever I humanly can (and I almost always find a way).

We have a friend called Fish (surname is Gill) who I have known for years and I genuinely didn't know his name until we got the invite to his wedding. Also our friend Sarge (surname is Potts, Pepper Potts to Sergeant Pepper to Sarge). And similar to Kit meaning people thinking my name is Catherine, we have a friend that everyone calls Al, so people always think he's Alex or Alistair. Absolutely nothing to do with his first name, it's because his surname is Scarre (to Scarface to Al Pacino) :p.

When I was young my family members and close friends of said family would call me "Peanut".

As far as I know it's because when I was a baby my dad fed me peanut butter and my mom freaked out over it.

    *shrug*

For a good decade, I was called 'fishy', as a play on my last name. There were just too many Jessicas floating around to call us all by our first names.

My mom called me 'kitty' when I was little, cause I apparently hated cats and I'd get mad when she called me that.

I've actually never been regularly called 'Jess' in my entire life, except for on Codex. @Pyro699 started that one.

When I was at college, my friends started calling me Nala. This, because my full name's Deborah, and the -rah bit reminded them of a lion's roar and the only lioness they knew was from Lion King.

Another was nicknamed Paper Cut, because she's Chinese and they have pandas, and pandas like bamboo, and you get paper from trees like bamboo, and you get paper cuts from paper. (I don't think I've ever used so many commas in a sentence.)

    Yes, I have odd friends.

I'm glad other people have weird friends who play word association for naming purposes. :p Some of the ones they use for me are very obscure, I get lost trying to remember the links.

Then in high school after years of hating my actual name, I asked my friends to call me something else.. we decided on Kat since it starts with a K also and I love cats.. Simple, not creative either. :p

It only stuck with a few of them, my best friend still calls me by my first name. I still use Kat at times and prefer it as an internet name.

I like your real name! Does Dan call you that or Kat? :p

My name is Nicole, but my close family and friends call me Nikki or Nik. I've always gone by Nicole at school/work, but I started introducing myself to new people as Nikki when I started high school because it feels more comfortable. I don't mind either name, but Nikki is definitely my preference. It always feels strange when someone who normally calls me Nikki refers to me as Nicole and vice versa.

One of my aunts used to call me Cruella.

I have a couple frequently used ones

Most people just use a shortened version of my name

Pirate- derived from the mascot of my college, my mother and a few other people when referring to me online

Worm- what people on my basketball team in high school would call me half the time. I always dove for loose balls looking like I was doing the 'worm' dance.

Bodiddly- not really sure how this started it's what my grandparents call me, my brother is Bocephus

Munchkin/Leprechaun- I'm the shortest guy in my group of friends even though I'm 5'10" and irish heritage

    and random other things

I get called the typical redhead nicknames "Ginge, Ginger, Gingey, Big Red"  In school I was called Clifford (The Big Red Dog).

I go by the first half of my first name by friends, I go by the second half of my first name around my dad. My mom calls me sweetpeas.

My sister calls me "Brah" my brother calls me either Sweetpea or a mispronunciation of my real name.

I'm usually just called Blondie because of my hair color by my less than creative friends. One calls me Sparky because I'm really fond of electricity and electric type Pokémon, however!

My first name is Woodson, which I use in school/business, my nicknake is Woody, and some people call me Val, for my middle name.

My nickname for myself is Top Gun Wild Boy Raw Dog. I've gotten maybe two people to call me that.

My real name is Matthew, but everyone apart from my mother calls me Matt. For several years, I had a group of friends that knew me only as Buggy. It's derived from my unpronounceable Polish last name.

My friends at college call me Matt. I consider that a personal victory, since there are two other Matts in my group that have been nicknamed mercilessly. ^_^

No one outside of Neocodex has ever called me Bone, by the way. I just picked a random, cool-sounding word to be my username here.

I used to use my name in every username and one terrible day a person cursed on me. And wrote my name. And from this day I learnt why we should use nicknames online, but as I don't have any nickname I just googled one and that's why I'm Renie. No one ever called me Renie IRL.

But I've always longed for a nickname  :(

My nicknames given to me by family are too weird to mention, and they wouldn't make a lick of sense. I was called 'smiley' at work frequently. I'd also get the 'Mandy Moore' or 'Amanda Hugandkiss'.

Everyone has a nickname at work. It's considered an insult if you don't have one.

Bus wanker - used to drive a bus.

Fuhrer - German guy we work with

Tin Tin - looks like tin tin

Stu-pid - a play on this name Stuart

Bob - a girl who looks like sideshow bob

    Pinky - surname is pink

Blowman - a play on a guys surname who is coincidentally gay

    Rosebud - names Rosie

    Synderblock - surnames Syndercombe

Chatty - for the quiet guy

    Underpants - her surnames Underdown

    Ginge - yes he's ginger

Sutcliffe - for the guy we work with who's a bit "rapey"

My name (Romy) is basically a nickname so there's no shortening it.

Cousin calls me Pikachu since it was my favorite pokemon once upon a time.

I'm been called Ro, Romulus, Mimi, Pepperoni, Macaroni, Ketchup (I bleed the stuff), Scout, Watermelon, Avocado, Guac, Lemon and Lime (last 2 are because of my surname).

Oh I had quite a few of them.

Kay Cee - A spelling out of y first two initials.  A neighbor always used to call me that.

Crayola - Nickname given to me by some stupid kid in elementary school

Karler - Another nickname from the same student.  This kid was a dick.

Muffin - A babysitter called me this, and it stuck with my mother to this very day.  Both of them still call me this.

Muff-Muff - Another variation of the previous nickname.  Only twice as annoying! *cringe*

Karley - A nickname given to me by my brother.  This is the only one I can tolerate because I like it better than my original name.  He'd call me Karley-Marley just to piss me off.

66 - My dad would always call me this because of my old apparel that had numbers etched on it.  A shirt with 66 was one I wore frequently.

    Wild Child - Don't ask...

    My real name is Jesse.

In highschool there was a redneck kid on the bus who started calling me Thug Life. For about two months I kept hearing about all these things that Thug Life had been doing or had done. I kept thinking; Man this is cool, this guy everyone keeps talking about keeps doing all the same types of things I have been. Then I was drunk at a friends house and he lived in an A frame style house and I nailed my head on one of the support beams and this guy Tim says, "Oh shit, Thug Life just hit his head." ...and it clicked.

Bob the Happy Elephant - swimming nickname of unknown origin

Welmo - A warped version of Elmo, also a swimming nickname

Donalgay - Swimming nickname based on my last name + gay

Members of the swim team are weird.
