NIcknames. What are yours and tell us the stories behind them. Do you have any for people in your life with particularly amusing back stories? These days, I don't think anybody actually uses anything but nicknames for me...
Ali is of course not what's on my birth certificate; it's short for Alexandra. Nobody uses Alexandra except for official documentation and my mother (and Waser when he wants to irritate me
).
A lot of my friends call me AC, which were my initials before I got married. I have no idea why this came about really but it's stuck. *shrugs* The Boy then used that and twisted it to Ace not long after we first met which is still what he mostly calls me. The older crowd also use my maiden name a lot still, and various plays on it and weird word association type links (examples to come of how our friendship group thinks!) that make no sense to anyone who has met me in the past 5 years, or doesn't know the thought process to get to them.
In terms of slightly odder ones, one of my very best friends calls me Kit, which is just that he used to call me kitten as a sort of pet name which then got shortened. He introduces me to quite a lot of people as Kit, who then presume it's a nickname for Catherine or something and are very confused when they find out I'm called Ali.
Then there's a small group of the girls who call me Ginny, which people presume is an HP reference but is actually a gin reference which will surprise precisely nobody. Ginny is how one of my friends once said she would describe me and she likes it all the more because my initials now are AA. ![]()
In terms of giving nicknames, I will shorten everyone's names to one syllable wherever I humanly can (and I almost always find a way).
We have a friend called Fish (surname is Gill) who I have known for years and I genuinely didn't know his name until we got the invite to his wedding. Also our friend Sarge (surname is Potts, Pepper Potts to Sergeant Pepper to Sarge). And similar to Kit meaning people thinking my name is Catherine, we have a friend that everyone calls Al, so people always think he's Alex or Alistair. Absolutely nothing to do with his first name, it's because his surname is Scarre (to Scarface to Al Pacino)
.
