I TA an undergraduate General Psych I lecture because it's a requirement for grad students in the psych department to be involved with the academic pillar outside our own in one way or another. One of responsibilities of the TA position is moderate the "optional" online Blackboard discussions for people who don't like speaking in a 60+ person lecture hall. It's really nothing. I just post guiding explanations if the topic got really off from the intended discussion/goal or raise new questions if people answered the discussion question with the same answers to the point of overkill. Most of which occurs 4 hours before midnight.

Another responsibility is to sit in extra help sessions as a free tutor. Most of the time, I'm in Codex or doing work for my actual classes. One of the students in that discussion board went to today's session for the first time and told me I'm completely different from what they pictured me to the point of mild culture shock. I respond so professionally on the discussion board because I triple check all my replies on Microsoft word for grammar and spelling mistakes and with more formal language than this actual post. They were a bit thrown off that I talk with lots of slang and cussing and seem so lax.

tl:dr

Do you speak the same way you type?

How similar or different are the two?

Do you feel like a different person whenever you type?

I think I type pretty much the same way I speak. I'm pretty personable with people I talk to and I think it's about the same online.

I think the main difference is I type more than I talk, I'm not a loud or very talkative person except under certain circumstances.

Generally, I speak the same way I type, but I tend to be a bit slower with my words when I actually speak out loud.

In most cases, I speak very similarly to how I type. The only real difference is that I have a bit of a speech impediment, which isn't present in how I type (obviously). However, between what I'm typing now, and how I text, it's very different; I am nowhere near this formal in any other medium, with the exception of perhaps email.

I don't really feel like a different person, but I certainly feel like I have to convey myself differently, in some circumstances. Similarly to how we use a different sociolect between the different groups of people we talk to (e.g. our superiors and our equals), I will adapt what I say to be more or less formal accordingly.

That said, the basic message is most always the same. Just written differently.

I think that I speak the same way that I type, but that's mostly because I'm weird and I speak the words to myself as I'm typing lol. I'm a lot quieter in person and non-confrontational. I can't yell at people or get angry because either a) people laugh at me or b) I laugh at myself. We had to do some skit in my interpersonal communication class where me and another guy were playing married couple yelling at each other to demonstrate a concept. I laughed the entire time.  When I went on mic in TC, they called me a Disney princess.

I don't feel like a different person, really. I try to be funny when I know I'm not, I say things in weird accents. I'm just the same ole weirdo IRL that I am on here.

I'm a TA for undergraduate biology lab... easiest way to make money and do practically nothing. Love educating others.. especially during dissections. Nothing more intriguing than the human body.

I am a much louder person IRL than I am online. It may be in part of bc I don't really care that much about most things I do online compared to IRL. I also use shorthand when I type (bc for instance).

I'm with most on here, I type the same/very similar to the way I speak IRL. But I am more quiet in person, unless I know you well or I'm drinking. :lol2:

Do you speak the same way you type?

Pretty much! Because I've grown up reading lots of books and taking plenty of English classes, I've learned it's important to convey your true self in the texts you write. So I try to stay pretty genuine when I'm typing things out.

How similar or different are the two?

Very close, but I obviously don't say "lol" or other acronyms out loud. My online persona can sometimes be a little exaggerated, but it's mostly because I don't think text does some of my emotions justice.

Do you feel like a different person whenever you type?

Sort of - I feel a freedom behind my keyboard, which lets me speak more openly with you guys. I'm quite a bit more guarded about my thoughts on certain subjects IRL.

Do you speak the same way you type?

Yes, I do both with a southern accent.

How similar or different are the two?

It really depends on who I'm talking to. Obviously I'm not going to cuss like a sailor in front of my kids, but they do probably know a little more about childbirth than the average kindergarteners. The same for their parents in the homeschool group, they're a bunch of Christian women and the language I use here isn't appropriate to use around them and their children. However, Yung/his family and my mom and my sister and friends see the same Jess y'all do, plus more. My dad doesn't think very funny, so I censor it a little and I know he censors himself around me. I (mostly) know when it's appropriate to keep my thoughts to myself and how to act in a professional setting, but I also know there's something a little off about me irl that's the same kind of off some of you have mentioned about me on here.

Do you feel like a different person whenever you type?

No, not really. Sometimes I think, sometimes I don't. Unlike Cohle, I'm more guarded with my opinions online than irl.

    Condescending lolol.

I feel I type wayyy to neat compared to how I actually speak. Instead of saying like 'because' or 'I understand what you are saying', I would normally say 'cuz' or 'I gotchu'. Just small things like that.

That's a funny story bro.  :lol2:  Even though they were surprised I bet they were also relieved!

Do you speak the same way you type?

No not at all. I use a lot of slang, jokes, cussing, impersonations etc in real life making it quite different.  I'm generally a fast speaker too and a lot more joyful/care free than the average other person.

How similar or different are the two?

There are some strong similarities! I use the same vocabulary IRL. I was raised to use a wide and complicated vocabulary which can be a burden while trying to get myself across to others.

The major difference is that when I type I can decide how I want others to understand my messages. IRL some people get frustrated with me because I naturally use logic and caution in situations where others think it's just a pain in the ass to reason. Others don't mind my serious side since I also make a lot of jokes, sing when I knowingly suck, dance in the wrong situations, etc. LOL

Do you feel like a different person whenever you type?

Not really. I do become familiar with fake names though. I go by Masxed on here but IRL my name is Calvin. Like others have said I adjust how I speak to who I'm speaking to. Maybe it's healthier to speak the same language to all people, but currently I do enough switching that I don't feel like someone else while posting on the internet.

I almost never use slang, and I'm mostly quiet but around my family and friends I get louder and I'm very extroverted. That doesn't really pass across when I'm typing.

Do you feel like a different person whenever you type?

Not especially, as I mostly sound like myself. I think I sound stupider than I actually am on here though.

Well I'm def much better at communicating ideas when I type them. I'm so bad at speaking, haha. But it's different when I'm making a joke. I'm very sarcastic so I have to be sure people take it as a joke so I use a lot of emoticons.

In conclusion - I'm better at joking in person but communicating by writing/typing. I also think for the most part I write the same way I speak, it's just that I have more time to get everything in order in my head before I say it when I'm behind a computer screen.

Same. I think my thoughts move so slow that when I speak, my thoughts that build the sentences can't keep up. And when I type, I have more time to do so. Often, I rewrite stuff and edit my posts before I actually submit it (and often enough, I give it up and don't post at all =_=").
I'd say my online personality and my real one are not really different? I'm just more comfortable with writing so I don't talk much in person. Which is why I'd rather write an email than call someone.. I really dread the phone unless I'm super close to someone, then it's fine.

Lol, what is it with our generation and the phone? I hate it too and would rather send a text. I'm just always so awkward on the phone

I've offended so many people that I HAVE to use them... :p

Normally I wouldn't really care, but I live in a small community right now. Not fun.
