Yeah, you have to be kind of careful. There's tons of different BC's that are different combos of hormones. It really isn't a case of one size fits all. And what works for you this year might not be right for you next year. I've switched pills about 5 times in the past 11 years. And then when we get older we have to switch from BC to THYROID or ESTROGEN medications, and there's a fuckton of those too, and you never know what works right until you try them.

Holy shit @ Sarah. I didn't know BC could cause the skin to do that. If you don't mind my asking, what BC were you on?

EDIT: Wow, you've been taking the same BC as me. *laughs nervously* It works perfect for me.

Hah! And to think, congressmen wanted to deny us access to healthcare just because they thought we were being whores. Hah hah. What a chuckle.

Yeah, I knew about a month in that it wasn't the pill for me, but I kept taking it anyway. And hey, I didn't get pregnant even though I felt pregnant the whole time.

My sister has gotten those skin patches too, even before taking birth control. She does take Metformin, which I believe has been helpful in clearing up those patches and preventing excess body hair, but it can cause some gross gastrointestinal side effects. She can be pretty flaky when it comes to taking her meds, so it's hard to keep track of what works and what doesn't, but I know Metformin is pretty commonly prescribed to patients with PCOS and/or insulin resistance.

I've apparently just been super lucky, went on the pill at 17, got it right first time, never suffered a single side effect and still going strong almost 8 years later. Every couple of years my doctor will recommend I consider a more permanent method and I recommend that she write the damn prescription and mutter something about how the NHS will be funding an abortion if she doesn't. So now she gives me a year's worth at a time instead of 6 months so that she has to see me less. It's a beautiful system where we're all happy.

Seriously though, every single one of my friends who has tried anything else, injection, implant, coil has ended up with drama and years of resulting problems. I refuse to do anything that I can't stop tomorrow if I want to.

I've heard so many horror stories from both the injection and coil.

I've heard so many horror stories from both the injection and coil.

My friend ended up with a pretty nasty infection from the coil after it perforated her uterus. Now there's a thought eh girls?

One of my best friends got the implant when we were 18/19, the hormones sent her completely loopy, she just couldn't handle it. They then messed up trying to take it out, so they had to leave it, let it heal, then try again. 6/7 years on she's still not right, and sworn off anything hormonal ever again.

I know far more horror stories than I do favourable reports, and from people I actually know so not even slightly exaggerated urban legends that go round. Absolutely nothing will convince me to give up the pill!

My mum had the coil, it perforated her uterus too. A couple of years after she fell pregnant with one of my brothers and had complications from it, then 3 months after he was born she was pregnant again with my youngest brother. The complications she had with him resulted in her hemorrhaging during childbirth and a subsequent full hysterectomy.

Ugh, I went on birth control freshman year (Seasonique) and it didn't work at all. I had the kind that was supposed to stop my period altogether or I was supposed to have it 3-4 times a year. I don't really remember. I spotted continuously for like six months, but I never actually had a full period. I don't know if that was normal, but I stopped taking it because I was tired of the nonstop bleeding.

Because I'm on my phone and too lazy to go back and quote, to Sarah I didn't mean BC is to only stop you from getting prego I was just stating that because of what was asked wouldnt I be worried about not having a period. I was put on the pill as a teenager to help with cramps and regulating my cycle

Also for anyone thinking about the shot(depo provera) seriously talk to your doctor first. Like a lot of BCs this one for almost everyone I know caused severe weight gain. I gained 30lbs in 2 years while on it and that was with constant diet and exercise. Also if you have any underlying mental issues it's good to check with your doctor too, major mood fluctuations.

And then when we get older we have to switch from BC to THYROID or ESTROGEN medications, and there's a fuckton of those too, and you never know what works right until you try them.

Speaking of thyroids, I have a fun story.

    *harp strums*

After my second child, I got the Mirena IUD. It was pretty much awesome for me. No periods, no pregnancies, no hassle of taking a pill every day for the past 4.5 years. However, I realized that I was slowly feeling shittier and shittier as time went on. Fatigue, headaches, depression, aches and pains, severely dry sin, brittle nails, trouble thinking, nausea, auditory hallucinations, and a fun list of other things began to build over the last few years. At first they were just occasional nuisances, but eventually I saw a doctor and was put on Citalopram (Celexa) for depression. It helped for a little while with the depression (not with the other things) but then I needed more. We upped my dose, which again helped for a little while, but it wasn't long until it wasn't enough. Eventually I got to where I would spend at least one day a week in bed. I have cried as Joe held me, telling him i was so sick of feeling like shit all the time. I am a walking zombie most of the time. I have short bursts of lucidity some days, then go back to being so fatigued I can't function properly. I started having legit hallucinations on top of the auditory ones. I feel like I've been getting steadily stupider over the past couple of years. Pretty much a train wreck of a person.

I was convinced this was all because of my IUD. The timing seemed right, and I had had it in for almost 5 years, so I was determined to get it out thinking it would solve all my problems. I went to the Health Department because I have no insurance. After telling the nice nurse practitioner my story, she agreed to take out my IUD but said that she didn't think it was the culprit and asked if she could check my thyroid. Huh. Ok. She did my pelvic exam, yanked out the IUD, then sent me to the lab for some bloodwork.

Turns out, I have hypothyroidism. I am relieved to finally know what's wrong with me, but scared because I don't have insurance. I applied for Obamacare, so hopefully I'll get me some Medicaid soon so I can get treatment.

tl;dr - Thought all my problems were because of my IUD, turns out I have a shitty thyroid.

At least that was not another birth control horror story. It sucks that you had to go nearly 5 years without knowing what was wrong with you, but now you can finally start to get better once you start treatment.

I haven't been to the doctor (for a well visit) in at least a few years, and I sometimes worry that all of the little symptoms I feel on a regular basis are an indicator of something much more serious. Then again, I'm afraid to find out if that really is the case.

I don't see how everyone talks so freely knowing that immature boys can read what is said.  Case in point^.

There is a genetic condition in my family if it is active either the lungs fail in the teens to twenties, or the liver fails at age 40+.  My grandfather was lucky to have a liver transplant that kept him alive long enough to know me, barely.    I have not been tested yet.

Good. Immature boys need to learn the bullshit we have to go through with our bodies. They want to make jokes about how "Damn, she's so bitchy, she must be on her period" without understanding that discomfort and stress that woman must be going through. Immature boys want pussy, but when you mention tampons they run away scared. It's a beast, boys. It's a fuckin' savage beast. Whenever a guy makes a comment about menstruation I am sure to discuss it in great detail and when they say "That's too much information" I let them know it's not ENOUGH information. If I have to suffer, I swear to God, I am bringing everyone down with me.

You think your penis is important to me in any degree? I can live without your dick. In fact, this is what I think of your dick.

    sloth_sock_puppet.gif

    Splat at your dick.

I am so riled up right now I accidentally plus repped you. I have no idea how that happened. I was typing with such vigor, I must have tabbed and entered and when I looked up, there it was.

    What  kind of liver?

Beef. Frozen at 0 degrees F for 14+ days to prevent worms. And yes, I still do it.

And to follow the birth control topic, we have skinning it down. (I JUST CURSED MYSELF OMG,) I quit taking it when I got pregnant with the oldest (who is almost 6) and then had a planned baby November 2012.  I wasn't able to find a pill that worked for me because I'm sensitive to pills in general and I refuse to have things implanted in me since I want a few more kids.

PRBM, I understand what you mean, however, the memory of being the first in my class/social group and accidents that occurred in those days are trauma I have not gotten over yet.  It is a long story and the long story is the reason why I am not comfortable telling the long story.   That would be recursion.

Napiform, I understand that livers have whole lots of substances that would not survive cooking.   Not to sound too tactless, we do the same thing with chicken livers and the cats.  It really helps their healthy.  Not to call you a cat, but a month of chicken livers healed Vinnies' skin problems.

As weird as it sounds, I like the flavor better raw than cooked also. Once I got over the slimy meat thing in my head.

The cat thing has to do with taurine. Cats absolutely must have taurine and when meat is cooked, it the taurine disappears. Google Pottenger's cats for more info. Interestingly enough, the malnutrition affects carried down through generations, which scientists discovered later that something similar happens in humans.

    KATE DON'T READ THIS

I was going to write a blog post about how I've changed my diet in the past couple months, but here's some liver info.

Vitamin A, all the B vitamins, folic acid, K, D, E, (usable) iron, copper, zinc, chromium, CoQ10, and purines. Eating it raw means you good a good, usable source of all of these. As previously mentioned, Taurine (a B vitamin) is rendered unusable by the body by cooking.

I started it because I read an article about a woman who started using it to boost her energy levels. (People say there's an "undetermined" energy booster in liver, but when reading stuff about it, I'm just kinda like B12 derp. But then, the people who are the type of people who would eat raw liver aren't the type of people who would be deficient in B12, so idk) Anyway, she noticed that it made major changes to her periods and skin, both of which I have issues with, but refuse to take hormones/birth control/etc for.

Those vitamins translated into benefits for me are: lack of pre-period monster zit that I've gotten in the same place every month for over a decade, MASSIVE decrease in cramping, lighter flow, I don't bleed and bleed and bleed when I cut myself anymore, I'm overall happier in general, I have more energy and don't have a 3pm lag anymore, and my cheeks are pinker, I look alive.

I think some of these things could be attributed to a deficiency in normal things for my part of the world (not near the equator), namely vitamin D and K. Eating liver may have fixed those deficiencies for me, which would explain the happiness and energy. I can tell when I don't eat liver though. I feel draggy and stuff.

If you're thinking about doing it, DON'T GET GROCERY STORE LIVER.
